Maybe we’re feeling a little punchy this Friday, but we think that an appointment at the new Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa opened last month at The Chatwal, could be beneficial to quite a few people. We reported the hoteliers are going through a bit of drama , so we’re thinking a trip to the three-room relaxation haven may be in order.
This is the premier spa’s newest location and the hotel’s Fifth Avenue address is right in line with the upscale pampering that The Chatwal's guests are accustomed to, what with the hotel's top-dollar room rates that have started at $600 per night during peak periods.

We recently tested out a Men's Elixir Facial at the Chatwal Spa, a 60-minute full facial treatment that involves a lot of rubbing, steaming, exfoliating, and some massage. Not to mention a slightly uncomfortable procedure known as "extraction" (basically, they squeeze your blackheads). Nevertheless, we left the facility feeling incredibly relaxed. As if our face, in all its blackhead-purged, fresh-scrubbed radiance, had tricked the rest of our body into feeling just as exhilarated as it did.

When Will We Get To See A Chatwal In India?

A lot of talk is flying around these days about a potential expansion into India (as well as London) by big-time hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal, who is Indian himself. Citing the "maximum potential" and "7%-9% growth rate" of India's current economy in this article, Chatwal makes it clear he has his brand-oriented mind set on expanding his luxury hotels onto Indian turf.
But until we get shots of a construction site, we have to scratch our heads and wonder: when will this Dream become a reality?

The Chatwal Will Become a Luxury Collection Hotel Next Week
Some great news for Starwood Preferred Guest members today--The Chatwal Hotel in New York is about to become a Luxury Collection property.
We noticed the change last night as we were trolling the internet for hotels, like we usually do. And we won't have much longer to wait. The hotel will join the LC group on April 25. That means you can earn SPG points for staying here and other benefits of the SPG program.
But you best have a lot of Starpoints on hand as it's a Category 6 hotel that will cost about 20,000 to 25,000 Starpoints for a free night. Rates for a queen bedroom start at $495 on April 25 while the king rooms are $670.

When talking OTT New Year's, you absolutely know for sure that New York City is one place to zero in on. Even still, the NYE offers at The Chatwal managed to blow our socks off.
We're not talking about the glam party at The Lambs Club either--although that does sound lovely, with its cocktails and canapes in The Lobby Bar, a three-course dinner at the restaurant, a Krug champagne toast at midnight and dancing in The Lounge with an open bar until 2 a.m.

Now, it's not a classic piece from any Art Deco period we know of, nor does it look like a piece of gym equipment to get us as whipper-snapper slim as a flapper. So what the hell is it?
Clearly it's a chair--and one our dogs would go bananas for. (Seriously, remind us never to bring her here lest we end up paying for the inevitable irreparable damage.)

Who's Ready to Dip into The Chatwal's Water Lounge?
We have to admit, we've been kinda disappointed by some of the pools that have hit the NYC scene this year. Mostly just because they're outdoors and it's already hoodie weather. But over at The Chatwal's fancy new spa, we can swim all winter long because its Infinity Water Lounge is indoors. Yippee!
When we first heard about a lap pool in a hotel basement, we were skeptical. But with its nature-inspired murals and hot-and-cold plunge pools that turn different colors, this water wonderland has us eating our words.

Where to Drink on the Cheap When Staying at The Chatwal
Spot the difference! These two bars may look similar when you zoom in solely on the rows of bottles—and they may share a street just off Times Square—but that, drinkers, is where the similarities end.
The bar on the left? The Lambs Club Bar at The Chatwal New York. On the right, we have Jimmy's Corner, a beloved dive full of boxing memorabilia and a jukebox loaded with soul classics.
So where should you drink when you find yourself thirsty in Times Square?

Liked The Chatwal? You Can Expect More of Them in The Future
Vikram Chatwal lives! The WSJ has an in-depth look at the hotel business of Vik and his father, Sant Singh Chatwal, who just opened his Chatwal Hotel the other week. You can see our tours of the hotel here and here.
From the article, we learn some rather interesting things like the genesis of Sant Singh's hotel business in America and his trips and falls along the way. We also learn Vikram has moved in across the street from the Soho Grand Hotel into a $5.4 million townhouse at Soho Mews. (pic of Vik's building.)
But the most surprising news is that aside from opening The Dream Downtown, the Chatwals have another hotel planned for NYC's NoHo nabe which will open in Spring 2011 AND the Dream Hotel South Beach will actually be two hotels called The Dream and The Night. (Currently, it's half-open as the Palmer House. That property will now open in October.) (False Alarm! We read the article too fast. The Dream South Beach will be one hotel, one dream and no Night.)
But they won't stop there.

The Lambs Club At The Chatwal Is Gettin' Cookin'
You've seen inside the rooms at The Chatwal New York. Now, are you getting a little hungry? We haven't sampled chef Geoffrey Zakarian's menu for The Lambs Club yet, but we did get a sneak peek at the red-decadent dining room and its accompanying lobby and mezzanine bars. And? If the food is as rich as these rooms look, we're going to have to watch our cholesterol levels.

What's It Like Inside The Chatwal New York? Follow Us...
Apologies, the video is a little shaky at the start but we promise it's worth it.
Between its ongoing construction delays and its yo-yoing high room rates, we've had a lot to say about The Chatwal New York. Now, after our first visit to the hotel since it was still a work-in-progress, we can bring you pictures to back up all those words.
Our first impression when we walked into the Deco-decadent lobby and strolled the ocean-liner-like hallways was: we forgot to wear our slinky silk gown and flapper bob. We're huge fans of '20s decor and The Chatwal has totally aced this.

The Chatwal New York Is Finally Open (And We're in Shock)
New York, are you ready to be taken by storm? Ready or not, our epic, long wait for the opening of The Chatwal New York is now over. The hotel opened its doors last night and we're still in a state of disbelief.
We wish we could speed ahead and get to the part where we know which A-list celebs and visiting dignitaries book the Barrymore Suite and how it feels to drop into that basement lap pool... but for now, all we can do is tip our hat and say welcome to the New York hotel scene, Chatwal.
