As we promised yesterday, we have the full report from the Wynn Las Vegas where Bon Appetit hosted a Cocktail Smackdown with features editor Hugh Garvey. We also promised video but we are having some issues with the audio so we'll get it up when we can. (Our camera must have gotten drunk again.)
Now, about the event. Attendees piled into the hotel lounge Lure where two rows of bar stools were placed in front of the long bar for guests to watch the demonstrations. The bar stools were a fitting choice for this presentation but they were really uncomfortable. And it was hard for people to sit down in them and get out of them. Remember, at a bar you can grab the bar for support when sitting down and getting up.

We were fortunate enough to be in Las Vegas this past weekend during Bon Appetit's Culinary and Wine Focus, a four day "uber-foodie" extravaganza that featured different tasting events from different restaurants on the Strip.
But the main attraction was the Grand Tasting poolside at Caesars Palace on Friday night where about 40 chosen restaurants along with about 15 wineries and liquor brands offered up some sumptuous meals and drinks for the crowds to taste.

Anyone who has paid close attention to Las Vegas recently has noticed an influx of celebrity chefs and their restaurants into Sin City hotels these past few years. From Thomas Keller at the Venetian to Joel Robuchon at the MGM to Alessandro Stratta at Wynn Las Vegas, along with Alain Ducasse (Mandalay Bay), Guy Savoy (Caesars), and Michael Mina (Bellagio/MGM)--it's safe to say that Wolfgang Puck and Emeril have gotten some serious competition here. Practically almost every hotel has a top chef on staff (ok so maybe not Hooters).
Coupled with a thriving nightlife in the form of nightclubs and lounges that serve up the latest trends in cocktailing, the new crop of Las Vegas restaurants have made the city a bona fide culinary destination. If that's not enough to convince you then how about this? Las Vegas has one of the largest number of wine cellars and the some of the best sommeliers...in the world. People have to be eating some good food to go with all that fine wine.
So when the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority wanted to host an event that would showcase the town's culinary culture, Bon Appétit magazine came up with a four day "uber-foodie weekend", as the mag's business development director Amy Foster calls it, from May 17-20 featuring some of the top chefs on the strip.
