HotelChatter Flickr Group member Pine Nut dropped this photo in our pool of room 402 inside the Hotel Covadonga in Barcelona, along with this note about the hotel:

Quiet hotel. Absolutely spotless and excellent staff. Good breakfast although the coffee is awful. No bathrobe.

Now it could be the lighting but that place looks severe, cold and unwelcoming. It actually looks just like what we imagined the nun's lodging for the Super Bowl would look like.

Barcelona Hotel Guide: The Casanova Hotel

Monica Guy, our own younger, blonder, more attractive but still curmudgeonly version of Andy Rooney has returned yet again. This time, she's giving us the lowdown on the Barcelona hotel scene. Enjoy.

The hippest hotel you've never heard of in Barcelona is the 124-room Casanova, love-child of the concept designer Samir Saab.

Saab's a funny character. His La Pleta Hotel in the Spanish Pyrenees is apparently a favourite of both the stern Spanish King Juan Carlos and the rather less stern Victoria Beckham. So we're on tenterhooks to know what to expect in this one.

The Casanova was there before - the building's been there since the 18th century - but Saab's come in to give the place a make-over. He's ripped up all the carpets, thrown anything soft or fluffy out of the window, spray-painted the floors, walls and furniture with shiny brown and black wood-polish and hired a complement of young, attractive, gel-haired, tight-assed staff to lure in the trendy crowd.

All this talk about a room with a view. Here's a challenge: find a hotel with a view as gobsmackingly stunningly superb as that of the hotel Abat Cisneros in Montserrat, near Barcelona.

The hotel itself is a rather standard 3-star affair. Apart from a fairly cosy 16th-century stone-vaulted restaurant there's very little to say about it. But there's an awful lot to say about the view.

Barcelona's Gothic Quarter.

We don't mean rubbish lovers, of course. Or people who love budgets. We don't think much of either. We mean lovers on a budget.

Because why assume that all lovers are loaded? Ours never are. Seduction's easy when you're rich. Ask the guy in Pretty Woman. But try making love while you're counting your pennies.

So keep the romance and your dollars by staying at El Jardí, the best budget hotel for lovers in Barcelona for lovers.

Because if all you need is love....

We were going to tell you all about the Hotel Arts, the most extravagant, ridiculous, luxury hotel in Barcelona. As everyone knows.

But we're sorry to announce that our Barcelona hotel snoop got hit by the prices while enjoying a G&T at their bar, and is currently in a critical condition in hospital. Our prayers are with her.

The Arts charges €475 ($700) for the cheapest room with the ugliest views. Enough to knock anyone out. €12,000 ($17,600) for a Royal Suite. Bet if it got out that the Spanish royal family stayed there regularly, there'd be a revolution.

So here instead, on a silver tray, we offer you one of the newest, shiniest pearls of the Barcelona hotel scene: the Hotel Banys Orientals.

The Barceloneta

Barcelona is the most butt-smackingly beautiful, hip, trendy city in Europe. Possibly in the world. Also the most hyped. But for a reason. If you haven't been there, go now. If you already have, go again. The city's growing, changing, evolving, faster than its ridiculous Sagrada Familia cathedral by Gaudí.

And if Barcelona is the place to be seen, you want to be seen staying in the right places...

Once again, HotelChatter flies to the rescue, with your top handy hints on what's caliente and what's plain frio in Barcelona's hotel scene. We'll follow on tomorrow with individual reviews.

Room With a Killer View: Boats and More Boats in Barcelona

If you're mixing with the wealthy holiday makers at the Ritz-Carlton owned Hotel Arts in Barcelona, then it's right that you have a view that suits a wealthy holiday maker. Like this one that shows you yachts--a lot of yachts.

The Hotel Arts is located right on the Mediterranean Sea at Port Olimpic and it's probably the ultimate in seaside living in Barcelona. With views like this it's a good alternative to staying in the arguably more atmospheric downtown areas along La Rambla. Like much of Barcelona, it operates on a truly 24-hour basis, plus it's got a great spa on the 42nd and 43rd floors, and this offers the same brilliant marina view.

The Truly Hip Will Stay at Barcelona's Casanova

If you're hip enough to head to Barcelona (and let us tell you, according to some people that means pretty hip), then you're probably up for staying at the "newly re-fashioned hip and elegant" Casanova Hotel, along with the other "chic trendsetters and savvy urbanites who flock to Barcelona".

The opening-in-November Casanova is also proud of its many "firsts". Not only is it the first hotel in Barcelona to include solar panels, it's also the first with an indoor and outdoor garden spa, the first with an on-site choreographer who changes the restaurant theme and decor every month, and it's the first with a hotel restaurant offering Mexican-Catalan-Mediterranean fusion cuisine.

Despite sounding more than a bit too proud of its new self, the Casanova Hotel is worth a look. Rack rates start around $458 but they have a reopening special price of $190 per night in a double room, available for stays until March 2008.

Room With a Killer View: Ogle at Gaudi From the Hotel Condes de Barcelona

We are suckers for a room with a killer view.  We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. We will feature our favorites in this space from time to time. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number of the hot view.

Thanks to HotelChatter Flickr pool contributor kokkofish we've got this gorgeous Barcelona view today, looking towards one of Gaudi's crazily-designed buildings, the Casa Mila.

This killer view comes from the rooftop terrace of the Hotel Condes de Barcelona and we're pretty sure that street is where we also got to eat some really tasty tapas and in the mornings, sweet churros with our coffee. Just one street away from Rambla Catalunya, too, and a short stroll down to the Placa Catlunya, it's a nice part of Barcelona to hang out in, or even just enjoy the view.

Prime Spot on La Rambla at Hotel 1898

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: La Rambla 109, Barcelona, Spain, 08002
July 2, 2007 at 10:49 AM | by | Comments (0)

If you're staying in Barcelona, you've gotta be close to that frenetic pedestrian mall that is La Rambla. So from a location point of view, the year-old Hotel 1898 fits the bill. Before you ask, the name comes from the year that Spain lost the Philippines to America during the Spanish-American war. Oops. Hopefully the link is mostly just due to the building, which is the old headquarters of Philippines Tobacco, and not some kind of vengeful thinking.

The NY Times checked it out recently and seemed pretty impressed. Big plus points, apart from the location, include a good atmosphere and well-evoked style of 1800s Spain, soundproof rooms (especially important on La Rambla), a decadent rooftop lap pool and a second pool in the basement for bad weather.

On the down side, room service won't feed you after 11pm, and that's a big surprise for Spain, where many people would still just be starting their evening. Many aspects of the hotel are (necessarily, perhaps) small--the gym, the bathrooms, the windows, and so on. But the summary goes like this: "a quiet slice of empire-era luxury in a prime location", so it doesn't sound bad at all.

Room with an Anti-View: Hotel Onix Liceo

Where: Calle Nou de La Rambla, 38, Barcelona, Spain, 08001
June 28, 2007 at 3:50 PM | by | Comments (0)

You know the scene. You open the door to your brand new hotel room, run over to the window, open the blinds and bam, you are hit with the anti-view. Maybe you are looking down a dirty alley, witnessing a drug deal, staring at an air shaft in the face, or seeing a brick wall. Whatever you are viewing it is not extremely pleasurable. Help out your fellow hotel mavens by uploading your anti-views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number with the not-so-easy-on-the-eyes view.

This anti-view was taken by Flickr member Flight 404 from the Hotel Onix Liceo in Barcelona. He writes:

Not a bad hotel. Fairly new. But unfortunately close to La Rambla which, well, sucks.

Indeed, looking at his other pictures of the hotel, the place looks cool. And it's new, which is always a plus. But maybe La Rambla (a touristy street) is a place to avoid. George Clooney certainly did that.

Also, booking the place is a little tricky since the website is still not up. This booking site has the most information we could find. Buena Suerte!

Hesperia Tower Barcelona Only for 'Trading Spaces' Fans

The latest hotel review from the New York Times isn't what we normally expect: Reviewer Andrew Ferren doesn't hate on the hotel, nor does he really love it. The Hesperia Tower just sounds better than average. But Ferren spices things up with his knowledge of interior decorating:

Everything seems to have a pewter-lamé thread running through it or a scrunched-up gauzy perma-wrinkle...There is a distinctly upscale ocean-liner feel to the rooms, which are tautly designed and outfitted with luxurious materials: varnished mahogany panels with stainless-steel insets and buttery velour upholstery in shades of wheat and burgundy

Of course, the focus would have to be on design when the hotel's architect, Richard Rogers, just won the Pritzker Prize. The 280-room property also has a rooftop restaurant, a private club with free drinks and snacks and an attached convention center. Good thing, too, the Times notes, as this place is built for business more than pleasure. Rates--that you'll want to charge to your company--start at $520.
