Pageant Queens and Tweens Will Descend Upon Atlantis
Yo, remember how we dubbed The Atlantis the Ultimate Tween Hotel? Okay, well: now they're sort of running a Tween Boot Camp. Seriously. Guard your hairspray and sequined ensembles; shiz is about to go down.
The Miss Teen Fantasy Camp is happening there this summer. Beware. Since the Miss Teen USA pageant finals are taking place at Atlantis on July 31, non-contestants ages 12-18 can come a week before the big competition to get their pageant on they "will have the chance to learn pageant essentials such as styling, modeling and interviewing skills from current and past national titleholders" in a camp sort of setting.
Miss Teen Fantasy Camp at Atlantis, Paradise Island will take place July 27-August 1, 2009. During the six day/five night once-in-a-lifetime pageant experience, campers will meet with current and past MUO titleholders including the reigning Miss Teen USA, Stevi Perry; Miss USA 2008, Crystle Stewart; and Miss Teen USA 2007, Hilary Cruz for “PJ’s and Pillow Talk” and “Girl Talk” sessions.

Atlantis Bahamas Positions Itself as the Ultimate Tween Hotel
You know those Disney commercials where the little kids are all, "I'm too excited to sleep!" because they have a trip to Disneyworld planned for the next morning? Yes, well: it seems that The Atlantis Bahamas is dead-set on making itself the go-to megaresort destination for tween-types the way Disneyworld is the ultimate playground for the slightly younger set. Perhaps we will soon be seeing commercials for Atlantis with Abercrombie-clad pre-teens exclaiming that an upcoming trip to Atlantis is making them too excited to sleep.
The evidence? You may recall the resort hosting the Jonas Brothers Weekend in Paradise, in addition to Fergie, Kelly Clarkson and Demi Lovato performances in recent months. And now: Miley Cyrus is coming.
Oh yes, folks: on May 16th, 2009, the Bahamas event of the century will be going down. As part of the Atlantis Live! concert series, the singer slash "actress" will be performing. And you can reserve a three-day, two-night Miley Cyrus Weekend in Paradise package for the ultimate experience, which includes accommodations, round-trip ground transfers on the island and tickets to the Miley concert, starting at $499 per person and and $209 per child 11 and under.
And, um, we will wait patiently for Zach Efron to launch a full-blown music career and to have his debut concert here.

Perhaps Atlantis Dubai Isn't So Craptastic After All

It’s almost too easy talking trash about the Atlantis Dubai on Palm Jumeirah. You know the drill: man-made island, home to hostage Sammy the Shark, breeding ground for cash debauchery and craptastic service. The list goes on.
But! Either the Atlantis has hit its stride, or the hotel’s PR person is working overtime. Yes indeed, yesterday’s review in the LA Times is really quite flattering. Sure, the reviewer lands a few swipes at the “garish” nature and “eyesore” pink exterior. At one point, the writer likens the Atlantis theme to “stepping onto the set of a live version of ‘The Little Mermaid.’” (We suppose that’s a burn, but that actually makes the place more appealing in our book.)

Atlantis Dubai Parties With $20 Million Dollars and Lindsay Lohan
Spotted amongst other depressing business news at The Wall Street Journal online: More than a month after opening their doors on the Palm Jumeirah, the Atlantis Dubai will be toasting their hotel tonight with a massive $20 million dollar shindig. The recession be damned, the Atlantis is going to party like its 1999 with Kylie Minogue performing and Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra serving as "Goddess of Atlantis."

The Atlantis Resort Lays Off 800 Workers

As if the 400 layoffs at the Borgata last week and the woes affecting Las Vegas weren't enough bad news, The Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas has announced that it is laying off 800 employees. This is about a 10 percent cut at the resort, which is the island country's largest private employer. To blame? Low occupancy rates. (And probably, overpriced pina coladas.)
The United States typically accounts for more than 80 percent of tourist visits to the Bahamas. The decline began early this year and accelerated with the global economic crisis, said Georgina Delancy, research manager for the Bahamas Tourism Ministry. "When September hit, things went south," Delancy said.
800 is a lot of people out of work so if you feel like helping out the Bahamas, the resort is offering a some specials right now through Dec. 21st that include dolphin interaction. And omg, don't forget about The Jonas Brothers on Dec. 13th.

Rejoice! Sammy the Shark No Longer a Prisoner of Atlantis Dubai
Sweet freedom for Sammy! The 13-foot whale shark controversially captured by Atlantis Dubai (the hotel originally tried to spin it as a "rescue" for the "distressed" whale shark) will be freed after the Atlantis received surprise government orders to liberate her from the huge lobby tank on the Palm Jumeirah property last week.
Environmentalists and activists were pissed that the whale shark -- a juvenile and a protected species -- was being kept in a cramped tank as a ploy to attract tourists to the hotel. The story grabbed headlines around the world; children walked around with "Free Sammy" buttons and the "Free Sammy The Whale Shark" Facebook group climbed to 11,500 members (versus a group called "Lets Eat Sammy the Whale Shark," which suggested people should take some time to "decide whether Sammy prefers to swim free or become a main course in a Ramsay or Jamie Oliver restaurant," and only had five members last time we checked).

Hey, Atlantis Dubai: Free Sammy!

Sammy the Whale Shark, surrounded by its entourage
Add another one to the growing problems of Dubai's' Atlantis, the Palm, this one involving a whale shark. Don't worry, it didn't eat anyone--yet.
The Atlantis which opened just last month had claimed it "rescued" the "distressed" whale shark, which is an endangered species, off the coast of Dubai, but according to some former staffers capturing a whale shark was always the plan. Um. Former staffers? This place has only been open a month!

Atlantis Dubai Opens with Craptastic Service, Water Outages
We get it. Dubai's Atlantis on Palm Jumeirah is nothing if not a symbol of big blowout excess. A price tag of $1.5 billion. Built on a man-made, palm tree-shaped island. A suite that costs $25,000 a night. More than two dozen dolphins flown in on a 30-hour plane ride from the Solomon Islands (protesting environmentalists be damned).
And now, the Palm has taken its over-the-top formula one step further, with an epic first-week FAIL. We already knew about last month's unfortunate fire at the hotel, which ravaged $34.8 million worth of damages. But frankly, that barely holds a candle to the first smoking dispatches streaming from Dubai.
Swamped by visitors since opening Sept. 24, The National reports insanely long check-in waits and would-be diners turned away from overflowing restaurants. Guestroom water taps ran dry. Much of the hotel was water-less for more than seven hours, due to a rupture in the resort's main water intake valve. Guests revolted, refusing to check out until they were able to shower, which made the lobby's check-in queues all the longer.

An Open Letter to Atlantis Dubai Re: Your Grand Opening Party
Dear Atlantis on Palm Jumeirah in Dubai,
You may be familiar with our work -- we're familiar with yours, for sure. You also may understand by now that we take a keen interest in hotel opening parties and tend to get all gushy about them, which usually results in an open letter like the one you're reading now.
So listen. We'll cut to the chase: we hear you're throwing the most expensive private party ever thrown in the history of the world. Literally. $35 million bucks for a grand opening soiree? Dubai is over the top -- this we understand -- but can you please be for real, here?

Why, Oh Why, Put An Atlantis In Dubai?

If you're trekking all the way out to Dubai, we can't imagine why you'd choose to stay at a secluded resort on a man-made island shaped like a palm tree that offers a water park, aquarium and shopping mall. Aren't these the vacation experiences Orlando was built for?
Nonetheless, Atlantis, The Palm opens in Dubai next month, with 1,539 rooms and the aforementioned water park, aquarium and 27,000-square-feet of designer shopping, UrbanDaddy tells us.
Don't get us wrong, we're not knocking the Atlantis concept, as it certainly works in the Bahamas. It's just that Dubai has enough exoticism to render things like a 100-foot near-vertical plunge and an 11-acre dolphin bay utterly boring, making us question why anyone would spend the kind of money it takes to get to Dubai only to stay at a hotel resort that's not unlike SeaWorld.
Although, to be fair, the hotel does have one thing Orlando doesn't: a Nobu restaurant, just like its Bahamian predecessor. That's for if you're also tired of the other nearby outposts in LA, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Dallas... eh, you get the idea.
