It's not so peaceful here anymore.
All this week, we've been watching the drama of the Waikiki Edition Takeover unfold at a rapid pace. The hotel owners, M Waikiki LLC, fired the first shot by dumping the Edition brand and anyone affiliated with Marriott Hotels overnight on Saturday and installing a new brand, Aqua Hotels and Resorts to run the place with a new name, The Modern Honolulu.
Marriott struck back by winning an injunction from a New York court to reinstall their Edition brand. But so far no changes have been made. Except that M Waikiki filed for bankruptcy yesterday making it harder for Marriott to take any further legal action against them.
All week long we've been posting commentary from the hotel's Edition employees who were forced to sign with Aqua Hotels or else be fired. Needless to say it's not a happy place there. (The employee have also set up a Facebook Page called Save the Waikiki Edition. 347 likes and counting!
But today, we have a different perspective to share with you--that of a longterm guest at the hotel who has stayed nearly 110 nights at the hotel this year alone. They write:

The takeover and the takeback of the Waikiki Editionis moving so fast that we're finding it hard to keep up with all the developments especially as we're attending a work conference in Vegas (for realz! and we are actually sober!) So we're sitting here trying to recap all that we can as we get the time. Fortunately, it's only 12:30pm in Hawaii right now so we're not too late!
First off BANKRUPTCY! M Waikiki LLC has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today. No doubt they blame Marriott for their financial woes but the filing also prevents Marriott from filing any countersuits against them. Tricky! Marriott, meanwhile, has called the move "desperate." As it stands right now, the hotel is now an Aqua Hotels and Resorts-run place called The Modern Honolulu. But given the craziness of the past few days, who knows how long that will last.
We have a bit of a tumultuous background with Mexico – similar to LiLo’s journey to non-slutdom and sobriety – but we recently gave Cancún another shot at love. Although all the usual suspects are still there (and some Real World leftovers), we discovered a civilized side of Cancún beyond the conveniences of the big-box hotels and silky blond beaches that few tourists ever see – especially for those who venture the 80-mile stretch south of Cancún, or the “Riviera Maya.”
In some rare cases, culture and calm (and even a bit of continuing education) can even be found amongst the partier’s paradise of the Zona Hotelera. Sometimes it simply helps to know where to look.
In between sun-worshipping, swimming and a much-needed massage while holed up at tranquil (yes, you read that correctly) AQUA Cancún , we unraveled the mystery behind mezcal at AKA Wine & Mezcal Bar. Named for wine geek, renowned mixologist and tequila evangelist Steve Olson, mezcal is known as tequila’s “Daddy.”
When we stayed at AQUA Cancun right after its reopening last year (it was formerly Fiesta Americana Grand Aqua), we scored an Aqua Club room upgrade on the fifth floor. Our entertaining ready room came equipped with a private oceanfront patio, living room, a freestanding circular Jacuzzi tub, a spa-worthy bathroom with locally made soaps, and access to the (drum roll, please!) Club Lounge.
Private check-in and dedicated concierge made us feel more Tori Spelling than Joe Average tourist. An endless stream of adult beverages, five food and beverage servings throughout the day, including continental breakfast and a lovely hors d’oeuvre spread timed right around sunset/happy hour kept us happily sated. A styled out entertainment center, telescope, and books, magazines and iPods to borrow were available in case boredom struck (it didn’t).
So what if weather.com says it's going to be a sweltering 90 degrees in Cancun today? If you were staying at the Aqua Cancun, you'd be lolling in one of their eight pools, cocktail in hand, thinking about your pending massage.
Indulge in one of the Aqua's cleverly named four-day, three night packages. Each US$1605 package (based on double occupancy) gets you a Deluxe Ocean Front Suite, and airport transfers, but there the extras diverge.
Want to doze off in a swing cabana? Want to be welcomed to your hotel in Mayan? Want a red parrot to come when you call it?
Try Cancun's new Aqua Hotel & Resort which opened in February to pretty much instant acclaim.
It's outfitted with eight pools, three restaurants, and three kinds of cabanas (beach, pool, and swing). It's got a rockin' spa with all various offerings of massages, jacuzzis, sauna, and hydrotherapy. Still need to coddle your bod? there's a gym and yoga classes on the beach.
