Sean MacPherson Moves On From 'Gossip Girl'; Tries Modeling Instead

"Sometimes...when I get real nervous..."
It looks like a cameo on Gossip Girl wasn't enough for Sean MacPherson. The Bowery Hotel's Twitter tipped us off to the spread that Sean Mac did for the J. Crew Catalog. J. Crew, people. Clothes you can buy off the rack! How bourgeois!
The feature is available online here and it features Sean looking tough in a leather jacket and answering questions about his life. We learn how he likes his martinis (extra dry with three olives) and that he always carries his passport and a credit card wherever he goes. (Let's hope he has better passport-handling skills than Kristen Stewart.)
We also learn this incredibly helpful advice on how to get into a hot spot. "Start your own." Hmmm...should Andre Balazs be concerned or no?

The Standard's Boom Boom Room Will Now Be Called QT (As In The Old Hotel)

The Standard New York's exclusive 18th floor bar hasn't even officially opened and yet it's already changing its name. Apparently, the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco has sent the club a Cease and Desist letter for using its name (Type in Boom Boom Room in Google and this club comes up first.)
While we weren't in love with the name Boom Boom Room (we always started singing the song, "Boom, Boom let's go back to my room so we can do it all night and you can make me feel right" whenever we heard it), we like QT even less. BlackBook has the scoop on what QT stands for (on the Quiet) but to us, QT will always be Andre Balazs' boutique dorm hotel in Times Square that is now known as Roommate Grace.

Bold Faced Names Welcome Standard’s Boom Boom Room

There’s no word of it on The Standard’s website yet, but naturally the celebrities are already all over it. Madonna (and Jesus), Jude Law, Jon Bon Jovi, Josh Harnett, Rachel Zoe, Lindsay Lohan, Courtney Love—and did we mention Madonna?—were just some of the guests on hand to help Andre Balazs celebrate the opening of the Standard’s new penthouse bar, the Boom Boom Room, on Saturday night.

The Raleigh Hotel Gets Dumped By Andre Balazs

The Raleigh Hotel in South Beach probably won't be getting any more visits from its hunky hotelier, Andre Balazs. The Miami Herald reports that Balazs is close to selling the hotel in favor of doing more Standard-brand positioning. And the sale is nearly done:
The New York hotelier behind The Standard hotel chain said he has a buyer for the 104-room Raleigh and that both sides are all but agreed to a price. He expects the deal to become official within four weeks.
``We've accomplished what we wanted to,'' Balazs said of his seven years with the Raleigh, 1775 Collins Ave., a favorite stop for celebrities and local hipsters.
And while Balazs recently sold off The Standard Miami, his company continues to manage the property--something he is not interested in doing with The Raleigh. But he will take the cash from the sale and start investing it in the Caribbean. So will the Maison Tropicale finally see the light of day? We hope so.

The Standard New York's Porny Antics Might Soon Be Over

The Standard Hotel in New York hasn't been shy about showing some skin with numerous sightings of naked or nearly naked people spotted inside the guest rooms through the floor to ceiling windows. Even the hotel's mascot and Twitterer Stan D'Arde has encouraged folks to go on with their sexy selves and submit their naughty snapshots to the hotel's Facebook page (they have to be taken at the hotel of course.)
It's all very Truth or Dare, Madonna-style but the Standard might be too sexy, even for New York. The NY Post reports that park-goers at the High Line Park (which runs below the hotel) and business owners are quite upset about the voyeurism that goes on at the hotel.

The Standard Grill Opens at The Standard New York Today

The Standard Grill has finally opened to the public at the Standard New York and its debut seems to be the only bright spot in the rain-soaked city. Chef Dan Silverman of Lever House has created the restaurant's chophouse fare but the restaurant is still in a soft-opening phase so only dinner is served. Breakfast, lunch and late night service will begin "in the next two weeks or so," according to a hotel rep.
Some background on the restaurant: Hotelier Andre Balazs wanted this restaurant to fit in with the rest of the Meatpacking district, having devised a somewhat elaborate story as to how this restaurant would have come into existence otherwise. According to him, it would have been a butcher shop before expanding to serve some light fare and drinks and then finally becoming a full-fledged restaurant. Indeed, the restaurant looks like it was here first even though it's adjacent to the funky Standard Hotel. And inside you can almost see the evolution Balazs envisioned.

Andre B.'s Sunset Beach Opens For the Season on May 15th
Andre Balazs's Sunset Beach on Long Island will open for the season on May 15th. But there are two things you should know before we continue: number one, Andre Balazs has a property on Long Island (Shelter Island, actually). Number two: not many of us are aware of this because, as we like to say, it's kinda his deep, dark secret. Last we checked, we had some outdated rooms, dirty linens, and decidely un-Balazs-y decor.
But who knows: that was two seasons ago in '07, and maybe the place has been spiffed up since then.
Our point here is that the place with its 20 rooms will open up on Friday, and rates are slightly lower than last year's seasonal rates. This year, you can get a room at $220 during the week and $420 on the weekends; last year's were $245 on weeknights and $420 on weekends.
Also, this year the hotel's restaurant is serving boatside from Sunset Beach's very own dingy. And oh, the wine is already on ice for you: Andre's launched his private-label Rose for the season. Yes, really.

Our Spying on The Standard NYC Reveals Their Restaurant
Occasionally, we find ourselves strolling through just the right parts of Manhattan at just the right times, and luckily for us and for The Standard's hype, things always seem to happen at the Meatpacking District hotel when we're around to snap them.
Case in point: We took a walk on a lovely evening and happened to roll by The Standard just as workers were removing the paper from the windows of the street-level restaurant, revealing tables already set and booths so round and so red that we started to drool at the thought of sinking our tushies into them. According to Eater, this is the setting for what will be a steakhouse from Dan Silverman, formerly of the trendy Midtown East eatery Lever House. From these first shots, however, we're getting less of a chophouse vibe from the space and more bistro; this is going to a booming brunch spot no matter what.

All About André Balazs in Arkitip
It has arrived: the 50th issue of Arkitip, which is both focused on hotelier André Balazs and designed by him, dropped into our mailbox yesterday. Each magazine includes a "surface mat" featuring a design of one of André's properties, and aside from a few articles at the end, André was in control of the content of the entire edition.
So what did we learn about the hot hotelier? That his promised wine, a rosé produced near his Sunset Beach Hotel on Shelter Island, is ready for mass consumption, and that he collects vintage nude photographs. Also of note is his acquisition of Jean Prouvé's La Maison Tropicale, a modular design by the famous architect which Balazs has currently lent to be on exhibition outside of the Tate Modern in London.
We wish we could have scanned some of the magazine for you, but it is almost not worth it; after a few vaguely presidential images of André in his office, the rest of the magazine is almost solely official photos of his properties and the products available therein. Now we're stuck with four copies, which is probably what we deserve for semi-stalking "One of the Most Stylish Men in America".

Andre Balazs Named One of the Most Stylish Men in America
Looking fly in a Louis Vuitton suit and a Burberry trench, hot hotelier Andre Balazs who has been known to light our collective fire here at HC HQ was named one of the Ten Most Stylish Men in America by Men.Style.com.
Sharing the honor with such trendsetting fashion icons as Kanye West (um, hello? Those shutter shades alone deserve an award) and the vest-and-Fedora-rocking Justin Timberlake, Balazs was honored both for his personal style and for the "honesty, authenticity and comfort" he incorporates in all his properties.

Standard LA Charged With Illegally Disposing Of Hazardous Waste

This is what happens when you cut out early for the weekend--a hip hotel gets charged with illegally disposing of hazardous waste.
While Andre Balazs might be the hottest hotelier around these days, something not so pretty was going down at the Standard Downtown LA.
Andre Balazs' hotel management company has been charged with one felony count of disposing hazardous waste without a permit, according to a federal complaint which made the news today. AB Hotels could be fined up to $500,000 if convicted. So what was the hotel doing with the hazardous waste? This:
The complaint alleges that hotel employees poured acid and chlorine down a roof drain beside the hotel pool at The Standard on Jan. 19. The chemicals snaked down to a street-level storm drain, and the fumes caused people to start vomiting at a subway station two blocks away.
"They thought initially it was a terrorist incident," said Johns. "You get a report of chlorine gas in the subway, and everyone starts thinking nerve gas a la Tokyo."
"We are sorry for this employee mistake involving diluted swimming pool chemicals," Nadine Johnson, a spokeswoman for The Standard, said in a statement. "We will continue to assist the government."
The complaint singles out a hotel supervisor who instructed an employee to run water down the drain as he pumped chemicals out of two 50-gallon tanks. The water supposedly was to used to not make the chemicals "so hazardous." Except people started vomiting in the subway. Hotel Hell indeed.

André Balazs: Magazine Centerfold

André just we way we like him. Grrr
January sure is turning out to be quite the hot month for André Balazs and his Standard Hotel chain. After successfully soft-opening his New York property while continually making the social rounds, André has turned himself over to the design and culture arbiters of Arkitip Magazine.
The 50th issue of Arkitip, due out in mid-February, will "focus on the creative side of [André's] work, paying attention to the way he 'pays attention' to details, his inspirations, as well as some of his obsessions." And if we're to infer anything from the above pose of André on the table, then this could be juicy.
