The Ace Hotel Palm Springs, which just opened in February, was hoping to have an all-summer long party with their regular weekend pool festivities but sadly, tragedy struck the hotel last weekend.

A 22-year-old man was found dead in the hotel's pool early Sunday morning.

Redlands resident Kenneth Crawford was a friend of two guests staying at the popular Palm Springs hotel, according to management.

Police investigating Crawford's drowning learned he was among a group of friends that had gone out drinking earlier in the hours prior to the incident, according to Palm Springs Police Sergeant Mitch Spike.

The group had not been drinking at the hotel, Ace owner and manager Alex Calderwood said Monday.

Inside The Ace Hotel NYC :: Funky Grandpa

At long last, after far too many opening date delays and general bellyaching, we slept with The Ace NYC. There were ups and there were downs, and we ate a lot of croissants. We know many have been displaced by the continued construction and permit drama here, but no longer as the hotel has a full house this week. So without further ado, we present all the nitty-gritty bits of our night at The Ace:

Check-in
After walking through what is perhaps our least favorite neighborhood in New York, where the streets are lined with "designer perfume" dealers and men are randomly camped out on the sidewalk keeping watch over the police vans cruising the area, arriving at The Ace is like stepping into an oasis of womb-y darkness far from the bustle of Broadway.

We rolled up to reception, a dark wood desk manned by nattily-dressed staff, and noted that to our immediate right was a long apothecary cabinet displaying the various Ace items available for purchase, not to mention the selection behind reception as well. Luckily we arrived just before 5pm, when a rush of other arrivals flooded the reception area and the lobby. After being briefed about the breakfast situation (see Amenities below) and handed our key, we headed to our room: a "Deluxe King" on the 5th floor.

First Look: The Lobby of The Ace Hotel New York

Behold the majesty of having the first look inside of the lobby of the barely-open, much-hyped Ace Hotel NYC. Up until our infiltration, the lobby had remained a dark, mysterious spot in New York City where no cameras seemed to tread and only tweets made it out alive.

While the darkness still prevails—this hotel's lighting is the worst for taking good photographs—we managed to sink into one of the cracked leather banquettes and absorb the decor, which reminds us of the study and liquor cabinet of an elderly, crotchety Ivy League professor who dabbles in botany as well as mixology. It's musty, it's retro, and its ceiling is still being restored during the day while at night, the artist James Hammond works to complete his "Graffiti Collection" installation on the wall of the lobby stairs.

That's enough from us until the full room review later today; we'll let the video above speak for itself. Do let us know in the comments what you think of this massive (by New York standards) lobby, and if you think that it's as game-changing for the New York lobby/bar scene as everyone seems to think it is. One thing's for sure: it'll be bustling this summer when the hotel's restaurant, The Breslin, finally opens its doors into the space.

When Will the Ace NYC Really Open?

As the day of reckoning fast approaches for the New York branch of Alex Calderwood's Ace Hotel, will it fly or will it fail yet again to open on time? Previous optimistic estimates have had us chomping at the bit since early February, and we're hoping that a real and true debut on April 1 will finally allay our fears of construction issues.

Know Your Manhattan Hoteliers

June 23, 2008 at 3:02 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

Ask and you shall receive. In a story the other week about the possible cold war thaw between feuding hoteliers Gregory Peck and Matt Moss (actually, that was just wishful thinking. The frenemy war rages on still), we asked for a copy of the Page Six magazine featuring some of NYC's hottest hoteliers.

And a kind soul sent us a copy!

In it, you see Jason Pomeranc (with ever-present arm candy/fashion publicist/girlfriend Ali Wise), Matt Moss and Greg Peck (totally did not pose together), scary Sean MacPherson and partner Eric Goode, the ever-dapper Andre Balazs, grunge hotelier Alex Calderwood of the Ace Hotel brand and chefs/restauaranteurs Todd English and Ken Friedman.
