This New Paris Hotel Should Bring Panache To The City Of Light

Where: Paris, France
October 2, 2014 at 8:56 AM | by | Comments (0)

The City of Light is a cruel mistress. She taunts us by opening amazing hotels we can never afford (like the Peninsula) and gets us all steamed up wanting to visit. She tantalizes us with €1 hotel deals, but only for a few weeks. And then she goes silent on new, but affordable, openings.

But word has reached us of an opening that has style, joie de vivre, je ne sais quoi and, erm, panache. Hotel Panache will open early next year in the 9th arrondissement, in the Grand Boulevards neighborhood (close to the Folies Bergères).

Formerly the three star Hotel Madrid Opera (which is now closed), it’s being done by the team behind the nearby Hotel Paradis, with design by Dorothée Meilichzon. Info is limited so far, but we know that the Panache will have 45 rooms “with big suites”, a restaurant and – the best bit – a cinema room.

Does Hotel Verneuil Offer Affordable Parisian Charm? A HotelChatter Review

We teased you last week with a shot of the cozy living room at Hotel Verneuil Paris, looking ahead at that most French of holidays, Bastille Day, this past weekend. Today we have the full review of this intimate, 26-room Left Bank hotel, to see whether it should be on your list of affordable Parisian hotels – a list that can never be too long on good options, right?

Check-In: we walked to the hotel from the metro at Rue du Bac, which is minutes away, as are a number of other public transport options (more on location later). Being such a small hotel, check-in happens in the reception area just to the left of entrance, while comfortably sat at a vast wooden desk. There is someone available 24 hours a day, also to let you into the hotel after hours, so you can leave the traditional heavy key behind when you leave the hotel. There is a tiny lift, but it only starts from the first floor, so people with reduced mobility will want to consider this and potentially opt for the room on the ground floor (but as always we’d recommend discussing your needs directly with the hotel).

With Sunday being Bastille Day in France (or Le quatorze juillet as the locals call it), we are in the mood for some quintessential Parisian elegance today. The city of light has lots, and lots, and lots, of très agréable hotel choices if your budget is limitless, but where can one find some of the same style without the bank-account busting price tag?

Last week we went inside two affordable Parisian hotels under 200 Euros a night that offered up eclectic boutique decor and attentive service. But if you're looking for something even cheaper than that (without having to shack up at a random hotel near Gare du Lyon), the NY Times recently went inside the funky budget spot, Hi-Matic in the out-of-the-way-for-tourists 11th arrondissement. Think of it as a Tune Hotel but Frencher and brighter:

The rooms are done in the bright solid hues of a child’s playroom — sky-blue walls, green floor, purple bed, orange shelves — and their diminutive size and packed, low furniture seem appropriate for tykes, too. Half of my unit, No. 42, was taken up by the bed, which was really more of a pile of futon-like (but comfy and cozy) mattresses on the floor. The only other furnishings were a tiny desk, a low gumdrop-like cube serving as a chair, and a wooden bar that held comically oversize clothes hangers.

Paris hotels are notoriously expensive, especially in the summer time, and especially when there’s a Summer Olympics in London. But HotelChatter Special Contributor Eric Rosen recently made a trip to the City of Lights and found a few places to stay that won’t throw the Eurozone into further chaos. Here is one of them.

The last time I saw Paris, her trees were dressed for spring…and although it’s now summer, you can still find great rooms at charming boutique hotels all over the city without taking out a second mortgage on your house…such as the boho-luxe Hotel Jules, a boutique property in Paris’s 9th arrondisement near the Opera Garnier and the city’s grand Belle Epoque department stores like Printemps and, of course, Galerie Lafayette.

You know hotel prices are getting high when even a Saudi princess tries to skip out on her bill—and it’s true, Paris has seen mostly super-fancy hotel openings lately what with the Shangri-La the Mandarin Oriental and Le Royal Monceau. However, we’re firm believers in the magic of the City of Lights and that you can still find a decently priced hotel room even during the summer high season.
