We've said it many times in many ways: a package with a word like "romance," "honeymoon," or "lovers" in it is almost always going to be a bad deal. Like, oh, 99 times out of 100 in our experience. This week we're happy to report that we found the elusive number 100, in the "Passion Package" at the new Affinia Hotel Chicago.
We went looking at boutique hotels in Chicago to answer a question. How bad would the damage be if a husband wanted to take the mother of his children away for the weekend? We pulled up the nights of May 9 and 10 (with preferably a late check-out on Mother's Day) and didn't expect much.
But we quickly found a score at Affinia. As featured in the shot here, the Passion Package includes that late check-out, as well as plenty of goodies to spice up a weekend away from the kids. Best of all, this rate was better than the plain old room rate we found on seven of the eight third-party booking sites we checked, at $228 a night for a standard room before taxes.
We recommend upgrading to the Junior Suite though for $60 more a night. You might need some extra space for, umm, recreation.

New York-based boutique hotel chain Affinia recently expanded its presence with the soft opening of its first hotel outside the Big Apple, at the site of Chicago's former Fitzpatrick hotel, a St. Paddy's Day favorite. To get the buzz going, the Chicago Affinia is offering two packages with rates starting at $189.
The Winter Getaway Package extends through March 15 and offers free valet parking, a $10 Starbucks gift card and a $10 CTA card to explore the city, for rates that start at $189 per night. (Mention promotional code WIVAPA when booking.)
Meanwhile, the Magnificent Shopping Getaway package, meant to appeal to magnificent shoppers looking to traverse the famed Magnificent Mile shops, is available through February 29 and provides car service to nearby shops for two hours, an organic canvas shopping bag, champagne for two at Martini Park and a list of top shops in the area, for rates that start at $259 for a night in a junior suite. The 215-room property is slated for a grand opening in April, after its much-hyped C-House seafood restaurant opens in March. (The hype stems from Marcus Samuelsson, executive chef and co-owner of New York's Aquavit restaurant, lending a hand with the menu.)
The hotel also hopes to wrangle in the hip and trendy with its year-round rooftop lounge. Later this spring, Affinia, famous for its pillow menu, city experience kits and pet friendliness, will open its second property outside of New York, on New Jersey Avenue in Washington, D.C.
