HC Editors Argue Over Hotel Doggy Treatments

A contestant in last year's New York Pet Fashion Show
Last week we let you know that the Affinia Manhattan had set up a special “Happy Tails Suite” in honor of the distinguished four-legged guests that would be attending the 137th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
This isn’t any ordinary suite, the bells and whistles where bananas. We're talking doggy treadmills!
Now there’s more. Tomorrow, New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania will host the 2013 New York Pet Fashion Show in the Penntop Ballroom (from 6pm to 11pm, in case you want in).
Our Contributing Editor WakeandWander has made no secret of his…disdain for the OTT pet treatment. But when he heard about all this animal foo-foo lah, he, as we say, lost his ish…
We’ll let him tell you how he feels.

Pampered Pups Won't Sleep Ruff During Westminster Dog Show

We can already hear one HCer now, cuz he's said it before. "This dog sh*t is getting out of hand." Obviously we're going to need to have another battle of the editors, because some of us have cherished pets and others, well, we couldn't keep a Chia pet alive.
So, it was with that in mind that we pondered this news: The Affinia Manhattan will be the official hotel of the 137th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and will be hosting special four-legged guests in their “Happy Tails Suite”.
Ah. That's when things got tight. The snorts happened as well as the "ooh's how cutes!".
There was an exclamation of the "GTFOH" variety.
We proceeded to read on, anyway. Ignoring the distractions and detractors.

Last-Chance Rooftop Romps Before Fall Begins
We hate to see rooftop season go, and with fall officially beginning tomorrow, places will start closing up shop soon. Which is why we've asked our HotelChatter editors and contributors to pick their favorite hotel rooftops around the US and Europe in case you haven't visited one yet. Ever the optimists, we'll say there are a few weeks of prime rooftop hopping left before annoying things like rain, wind chill factor, and snow block us from the outdoor lounging we love so much.
Use this guide to get your pre-Fall affairs in order!
Pod 39, New York City
Word's gotten out about midtown's newest hotel rooftop bar, located on the 17th floor of the Pod 39. And why not? Enclosed by a series of majestic terra cotta columns and slender brick archways, the al fresco space feels more like a re-discovered Greek temple than the regular old Manhattan standby. But, it's a bar alright. Cocktails like the delicious Weathervane (rye whiskey, grapefruit juice, campari, ginger, and a sprig of fresh rosemary, $12) make a great accompaniment to up-close views of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and neighboring Queens. Where Can An Olympic Tennis Player Go In NYC For A Little Peace and Quiet?

Just the other day, we were reading a story about British Olympic tennis champion Andy Murray, who bragged about getting to stay in "a lot of different hotels" during his seven-year career. Lucky him. Now Murray's in New York City for this year's US Open tournament (which got underway yesterday), and he's saying he's after a quieter hotel, to help him focus when he's not on the courts.
Which got us thinking: where do people go in New York when they need extra quiet? Well, the first answer might be, "not New York." But we know there's more to it than that. Indeed, plenty of Manhattan hotels are in the business of making you completely forget you're in Manhattan at all.
The trick is where to find 'em...

Pedal Into Fall With Affinia Hotels' Free Bike Program

Manhattan’s Citi Bike Share program has been delayed again until next spring, but fear not, there's still a way to get a hold of a pair of wheels to explore the city. Guests of either the Affinia Dumont and Affinia Shelburne can take advantage of the hotels’ free bicycle program.
The blue bikes with canary-yellow tires are custom-made bicycles courtesy of Republic Bike . When you sign up for a spin, you’ll get a helmet, lock, basket, map of popular bike routes and must-see landmarks around a 23.7 square-mile radius, as well as a list of available bike parking around the city.
Guests can borrow the bikes each day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and must be returned each day. We’re sure these will be scooped up quickly especially for beautiful fall bike rides, so book them in advance via E-Concierge, Affinia’s online concierge program, or if you’re not the planning sort, take your chances and wait until you check in at the hotel’s front desk.
Rates for the Affinia Shelburne and Dumont are available at $261 and $289 per night, respectively.

Having A Bad Day? Affinia Hotels Ought To Cheer You Right Up

Since hotels are in the business of making people feel good, it kind of makes sense that the people working in the hotels should also want to feel good themselves. That's what a new initiative hopes to do for employees at Affinia.
Earlier this month, a bartending workshop was led by Dushan Zaric, co-founder of the American Bartending Institute of New York, that actually had nothing to do with bartending at all. During the session, titled "The Art of Being Present," staffers learned how to think good thoughts, infuse their cocktails with love, and carry a marble in their pockets at all times.

So Long, Affinia Chicago. Hello, MileNorth Hotel!

A junior suite at the Affinia-now-MileNorth Hotel.
UPDATE: The hotel is offering Free WiFi! A hotel rep tells us, "There are some kinks in the system so it is still charging but the hotel is refunding the charge and the system should be converted to free Wi-Fi in the next couple days." Some glorious news for free WiFi lovers in Chicago!
The Affinia Hotel Chicago and its Fedora-wearing doormen are no longer.
Lowe Enterprises Investors have just acquired the hotel, which sits just off Michigan Avenue, from the Denihan Hospitality Group and are rebranding the hotel as The MileNorth Hotel. (No space between Mile and North apparently.)
Destination Hotels & Resorts (an affiliate company of LEI) is managing the property which has 213 guestrooms, the C-House groundfloor restaurant and the C-View rooftop bar.
Considering that Affinia did a recent renovation of the property a few years back, there isn't much for Destination Hotels to do to the place except change up the websites.
Indeed, the Affinia Chicago hotel website is now defunct while the MileNorth website is up and running.

Have A Sleepover, Every Week For A Year, At Affinia Manhattan

Affinia lovers, get out your checkbooks. After debuting the new look last summer, Affinia Manhattan is now putting one of its pretty, flower-themed rooms up for auction. But rather than long weekend-ers or tourists, the deal is actually aimed at business travelers and commuters, who visit the city on a frequent basis.
Every Sunday night for a year, the auction winner can come home to a 1-bedroom suite inside the Affinia Manhattan. And every week, it will be exactly the same (you can even leave your stuff in the closets!).
Which is why, for a wide-eyed tourist hungry to see all the sights, this situation wouldn't be that ideal. But for tireless business travelers, who benefit from consistency and routine (and only really want a quiet place to play with their stuffed animals), this could be a match made in heaven. As long as you're willing to duke it out on the auction block, that is.

When The Weather Outside is Frightful, Staying in a Chicago Hotel is Delightful
While the snowfall in Chicago last week wasn't quite as serious as expected, there's no doubt that with winter in full swing, there will be more snow predicted for the Windy City in the weeks to come.
We already highlighted a few mobile apps for scoring last-minute hotel deals at nice places, at nice prices, in case you find yourself stranded in Chicago. But there are a bunch of other hotels in town doing special things for the chilly weather.
· Kimpton's Hotel Palomarone of our favorite sleeps in Chiis doing a season-long "Winter Perk-ometer" promotion where perks rise as the temperature drops. Nightly rates go from $179 and, for every five degrees the barometer drops below freezing or for every five inches of snowfall, "guests receive a fun amenity meant to help warm up, snuggle up or cheer up." If it's freezing and there's snowfall, you get two amenities instead of just one. Some extras that may appear:
· Hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies for two delivered to guest room
· In-room movie credit
· Cocktails for two at Sable Kitchen & Bar, Palomar’s adjacent restaurant
· Late check-out of 3 p.m.
· Bottle of wine
· Morning coffee or tea delivered to guest room

Pro Skater Smokes Weed, Runs Naked Through The Affinia Shelburne

We wish we could have been there to help professional skater Jerome Rogers pick a more discreet hotel for his recent all-night drug binge in NYC. But then again, if smoking weed and getting high on PCP are the only things on your mind, we suppose any old room with four walls and a bed will do. Which (kind of) explains how Rogers ended up naked in the 11th-floor hallway of Affinia Shelburne at 9am yesterday morning.
When neighboring guests heard yells coming from outside their rooms, they peeked out to discover Rogers, high as a kite, ripping art from the walls and proclaiming he was the son of God. Fair enough. But maybe instead, he could have basked in his divinity from the comforts of his own room? Cozied up to a nice buckwheat pillow ordered off the Affinia comfort cart?
See what we mean? He really should have called us first...
