Toronto’s Drake Hotel Has a New Sibling: The Drake Devonshire Inn

For a new hotel that’s not opening in the heart of the city but in the country, there sure is a lot of buzz around the Drake Devonshire Inn. Mind you, it is opening in a quaint little town with a quaint name — Wellington in Prince Edward County — but we suspect it’s because The Drake name holds a lot of clout in these here parts (for a peek inside The Drake Hotel Toronto stay tuned until next week when we’ll bring you inside it’s hallowed halls).

In keeping with The Drake Toronto, we’re expecting a certain cheeky Canadiana charm to fill the twelve-room Inn, which is expected to open early summer. The architects have taken an existing historic building and are melding it with the new to create a rough-luxe design aesthetic where flannel would be appropriate. The hotel’s aim is to bring the big-city cool kids to the country — a sort of adult year-round camp — and that also means an old-school games room, farm-to-table dining in an indoor and outdoor restaurant that serves home cookin’ with a twist, loads of local entertainment and maybe the odd pillow fight.

And while you’re hanging out on the outdoor deck sipping a Pinot, it’s--quite literally--hanging out over Lake Ontario.

Rates aren't available yet, but we hope to know more soon.

When we released our Master List of Worldwide Hotel Openings in 2014, our Canadian hotel section was sparse. Sorry. BUT, news has been coming in from our neighbo(u)r to the north about 2014 hotel openings so we've been able to expand on that section. We'll add this to the Master List soon (sorry again) but here's a dedicated look at what's in store for Canada. Looks like we need to make a trip up there soon, eh?

The Master List of Worldwide Hotel Openings in 2014

January 7, 2014 at 10:37 AM | by | Comments (29)

Once again, we've scoured the globe internet to bring together the The Master List of Worldwide Hotel Openings for the new year.

As we predicted last year, 2014 is going to be a busy, busy, busy year for hotels. The NYC area alone is expecting at least 19 new hotels, one of which will be the tallest hotel in North America (more on that later today.) Miami Beach will see at least seven new hotel openings while Chicago is expecting five. Out in Vegas, all eyes will be on the SLS which should open in the fall, consisting of not just hotel rooms and trendy nightlife options but a casino as well.

We're also, if things go right, going to see the launch of a few new hotel brands in the U.S.--Virgin Hotels, Even Hotels, and 1 Hotels & Homes, among them.

Internationally, as it has been for the past few years, China, India and the Middle East are getting a ton of new hotels (mostly from Starwood who cannot get enough of those areas) but we were also excited to see Australia and New Zealand getting a few new hotels as well as Japan which will welcome the Andaz Tokyo and the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto which will open next month.

As always, our list is merely a starting point. Throughout the year, the hotels below will either open when they say they will or, and this is more likely, get pushed back a few weeks or months. (In some dire cases, a few years.) But it's not all delays. Some new hotels surprise us out of the blue.

Still, we've done our part, now it's time for you to do yours. Tip us off to more hotel openings in comments below!
