What $100 Will Get You in Manhattan This Summer

June 2, 2010 at 4:13 PM | by | ()

Let’s start with a New York analogy, shall we? Finding a hotel for $100 a night in Manhattan is like… trying to hail a taxi during rush hour in the rain. Elusive, but not impossible.

We picked a weekend – July 24–25 – and did some sleuthing to see what we could find for a Benjamin (and change). The highlights were off-the-radar rooftops and newfound Euro-backpacker friends; the lowlights were shared bathrooms and ghastly floral bedspreads.

Save Some Green While Going Green at The Serrano in San Fran

Billing itself as an eco-friendly hotel, the Union Square-adjacent Serrano Hotel in San Francisco is offering rooms this summer for $99. That’s quite a deal for the sometimes-pricy Kimpton family, of which this is a member — especially considering that rooms usually go for about $189 the rest of the year.

The deal is good for travel every day of the week, and runs through September 7. There are a few blackout days, though: June 7-10 and 16-18, and July 12-16. Guess that means Bastille Day is out, zut alors!

Roll Into DC on Your Hog For $99 Memorial Day Rates

One of the more surreal aspects of living in our nation’s capital can be the myriad meetings and conventions that are simultaneously occurring on any given day. You’re just walking down the street and, oh, look at that! Suddenly you’ve encountered a steady stream of gentlemen strutting around in their leather chaps, in town for — what else? — the National Convention of Leather Chaps Enthusiasts.

So that’s just a half made-up example, but you get the idea: Washington hosts all manners of conventions, and they tend to stay or congregate at the same hotels, often for discounted rates.

Memorial Day weekend being no different, this Sunday D.C. will host Rolling Thunder XXII, an annual motorcycle rally honoring American veterans. Angling to become a “Harley haven," the Washington Marriott Wardman Park is offering the “Roll into DC” package for just $99, free covered parking for your hog included. The deal is available for Friday and Saturday arrivals, as compared to normal rates that start at $119. Only a $20 discount, sure, but every little bit helps, no?

Book the deal using promotional code P51 (no proof of Harley necessary).

$99 Summer Deal at The Swanky Riviera Palm Springs

Summer in Palm Springs can make you feel like you're vacationing on the surface of the sun, but if you're willing to take a little heat, you can find some amazing desert deals — like a room at the Riviera Resort and Spa for $99. That's an even smaller number than the readout on the thermometer during the hot months.

We read the small print for you on this offer, and it turns out that this rate is good for a weekday stay and can only be applied to one of the five "Riviera King" rooms at the resort. If those are taken, there are an additional three "Classic" rooms that are book-able for $119. So yeah, eight special rooms out of a total of 406. That's not much, but it's better than none at all.

Score a Suite at The Reef Grand Cayman at $79 for 79 Hours

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 1 Queens Hwy, Colliers Bay, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

The Reef Resort on Grand Cayman is a proudly "all beachfront" resort that we've praised before for having a decent blog and now we think we're ready to give them credit for having a decent deal, too.

The Beach'in Suite Deal might have a bit of a try-hard name, but the value is there. From 5pm (EDT) this Wednesday, May 13, The Reef is having a 79-hour sale with suites going for $79 a night. That means you have until midnight on Saturday to book, and although "79" seems like a pretty obscure number for them to pick, we're not complaining; regular rates start from $230 a night so it's a huge break.

As far as we can figure, there aren't too many hidden nasties here, although there is a 10% room tax added. You have to pay in full prior to your stay, too, and the cancellation conditions are understandably not too flexible. But the rate is available for stays from now right through December 20, so you've got some time to weigh your options.

Every now and then, we'll be profiling hotels for $100 or less. Yay! Know of any other bargains? Send 'em to us.

If you didn't know, The Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix is part of the Hilton family of Waldorf-Astoria Collection Hotels, so for this luxury property (and host to every president except Obama), to have rooms going for $80 a night is kind of insane. But it's for real.

As part of a Mother's Day celebration and the Biltmore's 80th anniversary, the hotel is offering rooms for $80 for 80 hours. The special rate is only bookable for 80 hours starting yesterday and ending Friday, May 1, 2009. The rate is also only available for the dates of Friday, May 8 to Monday, May 11, 2009.

When we plugged in the Mother's Day weekend rates we actually found rooms for the rate of $69. Crazy! However, the resort does charge a $28 resort fee, bringing your nightly total to $97 a night. That fee includes include high-speed Internet, access to the fitness center, local, 800 and credit card calls, and a newspaper. To book, go to the Biltmore's special offers page and enter code MOM in Group/Convention code field.

Hotels for $100 or Less :: The M Resort

It's extremely difficult to write about hotel deals these days and NOT include Las Vegas somehow but this deal is very different. For starters, it's at a brand, spanking new resort, The M Resort. And the rate is crazy low.

Via Quikbook.com we found a rate of $54 a night on May 11 and 12th. Sure, those are Monday and Tuesday night but still, it's a crazy low rate. (The weekend rate for May 15th, a busy weekend in Sin City, pops up to about $240 a night.)

However, we should warn you that the rate does not include a $25 resort fee. So each night is $79 for a total of about $160. The resort fee includes practical amenities like the use of the fitness center, a 5x-daily shuttle to the Strip and internet access.

The M Resort also has all sorts of fun amenities that we love on site like the pharmacy, the Hostile Grape wine bar, the just-opened pool area and of course, table games and slots.

And if you would rather book through the hotel's website, they are offering the same low rate of $54 with the $25 resort fee each night. Although, their rates for the weekend of May 15 are $260 a night compared to Quikbook's $240 a night.

Hotels for a $100 or Less :: Aqua Hotels in Hawaii

All this week, we'll be profiling hotels for $100 or less. Yay! Know of any other bargains? Send 'em to us.

Hawaii, like New York, used to be an expensive getaway only affordable when big-time bonuses rolled in. But no longer. Thanks to the recession, Hawaii is actually on our To Do list. While the big resorts are still charging rather pricey rates, you can stay here on a budget.

The Aqua Hotels of Hawaii, which have always featured reasonable room rates, now has rooms under $100. A hotel employee told us that during the week of May 14-May 20, the following hotels have rooms going for as low as $60 a night:

· Aqua Aloha Surf & Spa
· The Equus
· Aqua Island Colony ($60 a night!)
· Aqua Waikiki Beachside
· Park Shore Waikiki (pictured)
· Aqua Waikiki Tides (newly renovated rooms at $70 a night!)
· Aqua Continental

Even better, many of the amenities at these hotels include free WiFi, breakfasts and manager's receptions. But be aware that most of these rooms belong to the Aqua Lite collection of Aqua Hotels, meaning the rooms are quite small. However, we really hope you didn't come to Hawaii to spend time in the room.

All this week, we'll be profiling hotels for $100 or less. Yay! Know of any other bargains? Send 'em to us.

While we're not sure what's happening with Vikram Chatwal's Chatwal Hotel in NYC, the Dream Bangkok is still alive and offering room rates for under $90.

A tipster let us know that room rates are currently at $86 but if you're an Amex card holder you can get your room for just $77.

We checked for a room on May 3 and indeedy, a $86 rate popped up for a classic room with a plasma TV, iPod nanos to use during your stay and an all-time HotelChatter fave, bathrobes! Wanna spend more to get more? The junior suite is available for only $162.

How much of a deal is this? Well, when the Dream opened up a few years ago, rooms were priced at $160 a night. It seems we're starting to like the recession more and more.

All this week, we'll be profiling hotels for $100 or less. Yay! Know of any other bargains? Send 'em to us.

We've always loved the quirky rooms inside The Curtis Hotel in Denver and now we're loving their new Crazy Eights" special for the summer.

From July 1-August 31, the Curtis is rooms for only $88 a night. The deal's name comes from all of the board games and video games like Wii sports and Rockband they have on available for guests, encouraging you to have fun during your stay. There are really no other elements to the package--just your room and your $88 room rate. However, you must book your stay by May 31st. Some weekend dates are a little higher.

Hotels for $100 or Less: The Hilton Papagayo in Costa Rica

All this week, we'll be profiling hotels for $100 or less. Yay! Know of any other bargains? Send 'em to us.

Before we launch into our next deal for $100 or less, allow us to give you an update on The Shorebreak Hotel: We told you yesterday that rooms were going for exactly $100 in the hotel's first 100 days of opening, but that deal was only good for folks who lived within 100 miles of the hotel. However, thanks to BookIt.com, anyone can score this hotel for $99 during the week and $129 on Friday and Saturday. But hurry, you must book by April 22.

And speaking of BookIt.com, there's another deal over there that has caught our eye: The Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort and Spa in Guanacaste is going for $49 on BookIt.com. The hotel just received a major renovation and now all rooms have modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, the Hilton Serenity Sleep collection of linens and sheets, and Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries.

This $49 rate also includes a free upgrade to an ocean view hotel room, but the rate is based on double occupancy. It's good for travel May 1 through June 30 and again from September through October, but you MUST book by April 22.

Glancing at TripAdvisor, the reviews are mostly positive, however guests do complain that the resort is very secluded and that the hotel's restaurants aren't the best places to eat every day. But considering some folks paid $159 and up for rooms here, you'll have plenty of cash left to take a cab out to a restaurant a couple nights if you like.

Have you stayed at the Hilton Papagayo Resort? Let us know how your stay was!
