WITT ISTANBUL SUITES: The Witt is small – just 18 suites – but perfectly formed, and trendily located in Cihangir, the current hipster favorite in Istanbul. The suites are large, design-led (midcentury-style furniture paired with starkly modern kitchenettes and traditionally Turkish marble bathrooms), and equipped with all the tech accoutrements and Nespresso machines that you’d expect from a decent boutique hotel. They’re big on social media – the Witt’s blog is an absolute must-read before traveling to Istanbul, wherever you end up staying.
Room Rate: From €195 ($262) for a grand king.
Address: Defterdar Yokusu 26.
TOMTOM SUITES: So you’re keen to branch out from your normal chains in this, the city of independent hotels, but you need your marble bathroom with heated floor, your lavishly appointed room (with pillow menu) and your obscene breakfast spread? This hotel was built for you. A spectacular modern conversion of a 19th-century convent in the quiet embassy enclave, Tomtom is an all-suite, magnificently soundproofed place, which manages to be roll-out-the-red-carpet luxurious and totally Turkish at the same time.
Room Rate: From €170 ($228) for a standard suite.
Address: Bogazkesen Caddesi, Tomtom Kaptan Sokak 18.
PERA PALACE: First opened in 1892, Istanbul’s original grande dame reopened in 2010 after new owners Jumeirah spent $30m tarting it up. From the glass-domed tea lounge to the original, still functioning elevator, they’ve stuck to the classic design – though they probably could have made the rooms a little sassier. The swish ground-floor patisserie was designed by Anouska Hempel.
Room Rate: From €208 ($279) for a deluxe room.
Address: Mesrutiyet Caddesi 52.
BUNK HOSTELS: Don't let the "hostel" in the title put you off; Bunk is one of those forward-thinking places that combines sharp style and clean rooms with options for all budgets: a dorm, a private room with shared bathroom, or an ensuite that's just like any other hotel room. Beyoglu is the original and best positioned, but with only 11 rooms it fills up quickly; if that's booked, try Bunk Taksim, which opened in March this year.
Room Rate: From €25 ($33) for a bed in a quad dormitory, or €80 ($107) for a superior double with private bath.
Address:Balik Sokak 7.
