As promised back in January, Hayman Island – the northernmost of Australia’s Whitsunday Islands – reopened last week fresh off of $80 million dollars’ worth of revamp, officially becoming “One&Only Hayman Island” in the process.

A lot has changed, as you would expect for that kind of cash, from updated rooms to a new spa and restaurants, but the basics are still there: a remote private island, a yacht transfer (or seaplane or helicopter, if you prefer) away from Hamilton Island, and the expanse of the Great Barrier Reef around you.

Most rooms across the various wings (Hayman, Pool, Beach) have the renderings up we saw earlier in the year, but we still like the light and airy look with lots of whites, greys, and creams, and cool marble on the floors. There are over a dozen room categories to choose from, including family options with interconnecting rooms, Beach Houses with their own pool, and the 2,000+ sq ft three-bedroom Owner’s Penthouse (above).

If you stay before end of September, you can get 25% off most room types. The reservation calendar over the next few months already shows a range of dates without availability, but we found a Hayman Ocean View Room early September for AUD593 ($555) a night, which is room only and excludes transfers to and from the island. The three-bedroom Owner’s Penthouse will set you back AUD10,600 ($9,925) a night.

One thing to try when you’re out there? The “Ocean Dreaming” massage, which is exactly what it looks like in the photograph, getting a massage while gently bobbing along the waves of the Coral Sea.
