ANDAZ MAUI: Andaz is not just the newest hotel on the scene but one of the most well-rounded. Little ones will love the pool scene, adventurous adults will love the daily beach activities, and retirees may just park it in a cabana all day long. We really enjoyed the Morimoto restaurant, the Ka'ana Kitchen where 90 percent of the menu is locally sourced, and the incredible spa. The rooms are tight but all have balconies. Also good to know--Andaz has the only 24-hour market on the island.
Room Rate: $500 a night for a nonrefundable rate. There is no resort fee and the WiFi is free too.
Address: 3550 Wailea Alanui Drive.
THE FOUR SEASONS MAUI: This is Hawaiian resort luxury to the extreme, from Missoni-designed cabanas at the hotel's adults-only Serenity Pool (starting at $500) to the decadent Wolfgang Puck's Spago restaurant to the extremely comprehensive spa which includes treatments that banish cellulite, and massages that take place in the ocean. Families don't fret--babies, kids and teenagers are not only welcome, but are just as pampered. The starting room category is spacious at 600-sq.ft. which makes the daily rate a little easier to swallow.
Room Rate: $979 a night for a mountain side room. There is no resort fee and basic WiFi use is free.
Address: 3900 Wailea Alanui Drive.
THE GRAND WAILEA, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel: Families look no further than The Grand Wailea. Your kids will spend their days at the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool which includes a Tarzan pool with a rope swing, a water elevator called the Lava Slide, six waterfalls and a couple of caves. Be sure to check out the new Fishpipe, an extreme rotating barrel "slide." It's insane. Beyond the pool there are several playrooms for different ages of kids. But there's also some space for parents only--the Hibiscus pool and the glorious Grand Spa, a 50,000-sq.ft. relaxation wonderland with a whopping 40 treatment rooms and a variety of water therapies. Rooms are a generous size with typical Hawaiian decor but all with their own lanai.
Room Rate: $419 a night. The resort fee is $25 a night plus tax and includes internet access.
Address: 3850 Wailea Alanui Drive.
WAILEA BEACH MARRIOTT: This Marriott is not perfect. The rooms are a little dated and there is no private beach for guests to access (you can use the public one next door.) But it is directly in front of the Shops at Wailea where you can grab coffee, eat lunch, buy groceries, rent scuba gear and pick up a new bathing suit or sunglasses. Also worth checking out is the adults-only Serenity Pool, the most modern public space on the property and the Mala and MiGRANT restaurants, now helmed by "Top Chef" alum, Sheldon Simeon. (More on that tomorrow.)
Room Rate: $249 a night. The resort fee is $30 a night and includes parking. Internet is free in the lobby but $16 in the rooms.
Address: 3700 Wailea Alanui.
