Given how little information we could parse together about the two new Montcalm Hotels potentially opening in London, we headed into town to see what we could find in person. Double-checking addresses, we struck one of our list before we even left the house, with the hotel on Finsbury Square no longer featured on the website.

What we found in Shoreditch was a little more encouraging in terms of actual construction going on, with the hotel at or very near its highest point. Just north of Old Street Station, the pointy building is very nearly without horizontal lines, sitting next to a fancy apartment complex (on the left) also in progress.

A tipster whispers in our ear that despite the ongoing construction under the Montcalm banner, a number of other groups, including Virgin Hotels, are interested in acquiring the property. While we can’t verify that bit of delicious hotel gossip, we’re all over it – especially since Montcalm doesn’t seem quite sure of anything when it comes to the hotel.

Opening will be mid-2014 (we don’t think so) or autumn 2014 (also unlikely) depending on where you look, and room count ranges from 200 to 269 (we’re guessing the latter based on the size of the building). It’s still located near “Silicone Roundabout” (an unfortunate and persistent typo that shows up not once, but twice) and is described as rising “into the glistening skyline, an elegant manifestation of glory...” (what?).

Rooms will have iPod docking stations, “lifestyle guest amenities” (whatever those are), in-room aroma, pillow menu, and luxury rain showers. At this point, we’re mostly excited about reference to a “Sky Bar” on the top floor.

We’ll keep our ear to the ground on this one; if you know anything we don’t, send us a tip. In the meantime though, Mr. Branson, something to think about?
