Funky Friday: The Surrealistic Pillow Revisited at Hotel Triton
Welcome to Funky Friday, a new segment we’re trying out which features one photo that we think singularly expresses a hotel’s inner psyche. We look for, and often find, a lot of wacky, wild and wondrous designs that seem to have one thing in common: a Type A personality. So why not have a bit of fun as we all wrap up our week by taking a quick look at some hotels that quite frankly, want our attention.
Free-spirited self-expression is alive and well in San Francisco—where it all began—and the Hotel Triton aims to keep it that way. Now a Kimpton hotel, Hotel Triton celebrates individuality and the creative spirit, certainly its own, and invites us along for the ride.
The hotel’s mission, and its interiors, draw inspiration from the city’s culturally rich and colorful past. One would not have to have lived in San Francisco to be affected by its free-mindedness, which spread around the world via icons of 60s and 70s pop culture. We like this hotel for its upbeat, fun looks but also for what it stands for, and find it most fitting for Funky Friday.
Triton’s design concept, if there is one, is epitomized in this 'far out' lobby. There are no dominant colors, singular shapes or repeating patterns— it’s all in the mix. Come as you are and you will fit in. That’s seems to be the point and we get it.
There are 140 rooms including Celebrity Suites designed by Jerry Garcia (yeah, back in the 1990s) and Kathy Griffin, and there’s even a Haagen Daaz suite for ice cream-a-holics. Kimpton Loyalty members get free Wi-Fi and a $10 ($15 in New York) “raid the mini bar” credit—that shouldn’t take long to use up. The hotel offers lots of great packages from parking to pets to “Summer of Love” magic bus tours.
In case you missed this artistic tribute, look closely at the art wall over the red striped chair. You will see the words “Surrealistic Pillow,” paying due homage to the iconic San Francisco rock band, Jefferson Airplane. Perhaps Grace Slick would like to design a suite?
