Funky Friday: The Amazing Floating Candles In the Bar At The Dolder Grand
Welcome to Funky Friday, a new segment we’re trying out which features one photo that we think singularly expresses a hotel’s inner psyche. We look for, and often find, a lot of wacky, wild and wondrous designs that seem to have one thing in common: a Type A personality. So why not have a bit of fun as we all wrap up our week by taking a quick look at some hotels that quite frankly, want our attention.
For this week’s Funky Friday, we’re stepping up to the bar at The Dolder Grand in Zurich, at least via the internet. Now look up. It is a magical sight to behold – an array of sparkling candles seemingly floating in mid-air.
OK, they’re not real candles and they're not really floating, they’re custom lights made by Swarovski crystal, which explains the extra sparkle. Swarovski is not just about jewelry or your favorite figurine. It has a successful architectural lighting division and has created some pretty amazing designs for hotels such as the Sparkling Hill Resort in British Columbia.
According to Speirs and Major, lighting design consultants for the renovation of The Dolder Grand, the bar flaunts 80 “floating candles” each with a crystal encased 'flame' of super bright LED illumination. LED lights are long lasting and highly energy efficient, so the hotel doesn’t have to worry about changing the bulbs for a long, long time.
While we’re on the subject of crystal and hotels, Baccarat sure comes to mind. We can almost guarantee — almost— that the upcoming opening of the flagship Baccarat Hotel and Residences in New York (Baccarat is still targeting a 2014 opening) will surely have some sparkling chandeliers of its own.
