That's so Maldives

All Maldives hotels are equally gorgeous, of course, but some are more gorgeous than others – hence our excitement at the official opening of Maalifushi by COMO, the company’s second resort in the Maldives, and a little brother/sister for Cocoa Island.

It’s your standard Maldives affair: a private, 20-acre white sand island with a 'street' of rooms suspended over jewel-colored water. One slight difference is that it also has garden rooms, billed as the choice for small children. A non-honeymooning Maldives hotel? Now that’s news.

There’s a restaurant, Madi, a pool bar and lounge, a signature Como Shambhala spa and an onsite dive center. Want to get away from it all (as much as you can while stranded on a remote Maldivian island)? There’s another restaurant, Tai, on the other side of the island, and the hotel also owns a nearby strip of land that guests can book for romantic dinners away from child guests.

Rooms were designed by Koichiro Ikebuchi, and use locally sourced materials to create a simple look – wood floors, white fittings, with the focus firmly on the views. Your choices, if you want an overwater room, are between suites and villas – all have their own private pool and sundeck. The land rooms, located in the middle of the island, are surrounded by undergrowth, so the feel is more jungle than ‘garden view’, as they’re billed. The overall effect is very much Maldives-by-numbers, but that's for a reason: Maldives hotels are gorgeous, period.

The property has been in soft opening since April, but is now fully open. Rates start at $650 for a ‘garden view’, but there are various packages, including, currently, a seven nights for the price of five deal, which brings it down to $464, half board. Not bad - for the Maldives.
