Hot To Trot And Kid-Friendly: Praia Verde Is A Trendy Parent's Dream Hotel

Are you a parent who prides themself on being cool, not frumpy? Does your heart sink if you check into a family-friendly-but-mediocre resort? Do you have too much self-awareness to run the gauntlet of wrathful looks if you chance it with the kids in a trendy place?

If so, you need to get to Portugal. Specifically, Praia Verde, in Castro Marim, on the eastern coast of the Algarve. It’s the latest property for the Design Hotels portfolio, and it’s family friendly. No, apparently that’s not a contradiction in terms.

The all-suite property opened in April, and goes for a look that will complement, rather than dominate the landscape: a low-rise building with neutral colors and natural materials – wood, slate, even straw – to keep the focus on the outside, even when inside.

All 40 suites have either a garden or a sea view, and include a kitchenette and balcony as well as the standard bedroom-living room combo. Stuck for cooking ideas? Hit up the onsite store, full of local goodies like olive oil and homemade jam.

Nearby is the beach, some salt flats and a nature reserve. Plenty to keep the kids busy, but if you want more, the hotel has a playroom, offers a range of outdoor pursuits, and runs a weekly event calendar of kids’ activities.

Rates start at the almost too good to be true €120 ($162), though they’re hovering around the €200 mark for the summer.

In short: please excuse us while we go rustle up some children so we can stay here too.
