Welcome to Funky Friday, a new segment we’re trying out which features one photo that we think singularly expresses a hotel’s inner psyche. We look for, and often find, a lot of wacky, wild and wondrous designs that seem to have one thing in common: a Type A personality. So why not have a bit of fun as we all wrap up our week by taking a quick look at some hotels that quite frankly, want our attention.

“Anything but Ordinary” is the trademark of The Park Hotels brand of luxury boutique hotels in India. We would only have to look at its flagship hotel, The Park Hyderabad, to say we would agree. The 270-room Park Hyderabad is a design extravaganza that is all about the bling, and makes for a great Funky Friday segment.

To understand the hotel’s design is to know a little about the locality. Hyderabad was founded in 1591 and is the sixth largest city in India. As one of the country’s cultural hubs, it is base camp for techies, known as “Cyberabad,” and the film industry, referred to as “Tollywood.” That sounds a lot like the State of California but gives us a clue as to hip, social scene in the area, and for whom the nightlife is an integral part of the day’s activities.

A dominating theme that carries throughout the Park Hotel’s LEED Gold design is the reflection, literally – of the wealth and riches of former Nazim Monarchy, reigning from 1710 to 1948. The last Nazim, Mir Osman Ali Kahn, was considered the richest man in the world and was known for his gem-stuffed jewelry collection that would impress any modern monarchy. One of his prized possessions was a rare Jacob Diamond, which he used as a paperweight.

This brings us to the bling and our photo pick for Funky Friday, The Carbon Bar. Aptly named after the structural element that makes up a diamond, the Carbon Bar is located in the hotel’s Kismet nightclub, which was graced by Grace Jones for the launch party. The bar’s design – brilliantly delivered —represents the facets of a cut gemstone, dramatized by bright LED lighting. The space has a very futuristic look, with detail-free built-in seating and a sharp angular layout.

We admit to stepping outside of our own single-photo rule, but we wanted to show the same space transformed by other colors. Gemstones, rather.
