Welcome to Funky Friday, a new segment we’re trying out which features one photo that we think singularly expresses a hotel’s inner psyche. We look for, and often find, a lot of wacky, wild and wondrous designs that seem to have one thing in common: a Type A personality. So why not have a bit of fun as we all wrap up our week by taking a quick look at some hotels that quite frankly, want our attention.

Take the “ky” out of “funky” and what you have is fun. This week’s Funky Friday edition takes a lighthearted look at the fun, if not funny, side of hospitality design. Our featured image is the cocktail lounge at Portago Urban in Granada, Spain.

Portago Urban is one of two independently hip properties of Portago Hotels, the other being nearby Portago Suites. The hotel group takes its name from the Marquis de Portago, Spain’s first Ferrari race care driver. (By the way, Ferrari is planning its first hotel, look for details soon.)

We are the first to admit that this happy-go-lucky design kinda grew on us. The more we looked at it the more we liked it. From a design perspective it really is more than the sum of its parts. And oh, look at the parts. The interior design concept is credited to Studio ILMIODESIGN.

Let’s get to the hats first. Yeah, that’s a bit funky but look at it in the context of a bar setting (where strangers gather) along with the sign “nice to meet you.” It represents--we think--hat etiquette where one politely removes their hat when greeting someone. The lower black hats in the room as pendant light fixtures are a nice touch.

Other “parts“ we like are the curvy bar devoid of bar stools and the Eames rocking chairs for which we give extra points. This is a classic chair designed over 60 years ago by Charles Eames, whose works, as you can see, still have impact in modern design.

Rooms from €120
