X2 Resorts is a design-conscious chain of luxury accommodations in Asia and Australia, ranging from villas, to intimate resorts, to extended stay rentals. This July, X2 will open the industrial-strength doors to its latest resort destination, X2 River Kwai (yes, that River Kwai), located in Kanchanaburi, about 90 minutes west of Bangkok.

The locality is forever memorialized in WWII history and on film. It is here that the Japanese set up base camp for POWS to build the Thai-Burma Railway and the "Bridge on the River Kwai." The 1957 film of the same name won seven Oscars, four BAFTAs, and three Golden Globes, and is an eternal classic. The recently released Railway Man tells quite another embracing story, also shot on location here as well as in the UK and Australia.

The Bridge on the River Kwai, on a more peaceful day in history

The X2 River Kwai has a front row seat to unspoiled scenery along the famous river. The hotel will open with just eight luxury “cabin” accommodations, with another 18 planned for 2015 or beyond. The presently unobstructed views may become less unobstructed when the new units are added, which will be “floating” on the river. Sleepwalkers take note.

The architecture and interiors were designed by Thai firm Agaligo Studio. The style of the cabins has been self-labeled as “industrial chic.” The cabins feature exposed steel framing inside of which corrugated metal "boxes" are tucked in nice and neat. Each container-like unit features a high-performance coating in colors that compliment the surrounding climate. The cabins are structurally elevated, with cantilevered wooden decks and glass balustrades.

Industrial chic indeed, and a great eco-friendly solution as well.

Amenities in the rooms include Bose sound system, 40” LCD TV, mini-bar, safe, double lavatories and tubs for two, media library, iPads, in-room massage (not free) and internet access (we fear it is not free.) The only clearly stated offer of free WiFi is in the common areas.

X2’s mission statement across its brand is to ”satisfy the spirit.” Our spirits would be more satisfied if free WiFi was extended to the cabins.

Guest rooms offer simple modern appointments, creatively recycled materials, and soothing colors to help us chill out

Who wouldn't want to spend countless hours on this private deck? Free WiFi would help us enjoy the setting.

Bathrooms are all out modern in black and white, with marble floors, unadorned trim, and industrial pendant lighting.

Rates from Bhat 5,500 / $172
