Welcome to Funky Friday, a new segment we’re trying out which features one photo that we think singularly expresses a hotel’s inner psyche. We look for, and often find, a lot of wacky, wild and wondrous designs that seem to have one thing in common: a Type A personality. So why not have a bit of fun as we all wrap up our week by taking a quick look at some hotels that quite frankly, want our attention.

For this week’s Funky Friday, we’re taking a lighthearted look at the concept of dude ranch (a real ranch that has been converted to a pretend ranch) as hotel and more specifically, that of the luxury dude ranch. While it would be unheard of back in the 1800s, you’ll find it today at The Ranch at Rock Creek. (Yes, the site of the recent nuptials for Kate Bosworth)

Located within 10 square miles of unspoiled scenery, The Ranch at Rock Creek’s website claims to “live the cowboy life.” While they would not use the word “dude,” of course, they do offer the term “glamping” (referring to their luxury tents) which seems more apropos. Seriously, if this were the real deal, the sense of fun might quickly dissipate with the sense of smell while cleaning up after the horses, cows, and who knows what else. Anyone remember City Slickers?

We think the above picture of the bar gives it away. And we have to say this is a great looking Western style bar, one of the best designs we’ve seen that features saddle stools (clever use of reclaimed timber.) Our point is that the last thing a real cowboy wants to see at the end of the day is a saddle. Not to mention that a real ranch doesn't need a sign saying "ranch."

The Ranch offers a variety of luxury accommodations ranging from private cabins, rooms in a barn or lodge, and a couple of glam tents. All are very well appointed, and they should be for prices starting at $850. Bringing kids over 2 years old? That’ll cost you $700 a night, and the family pet, $50 a night. To all of this add the “ranch fee” of 20%.

[Rooms from $850 to $7,200]
