The Sanderson and St Martins Lane Hotels Freshen Up Their Minimalist Vibe

With so many new hotels now open in London (and more to come), it's no surprise that two of the original boutique hotels in town--The Sanderson and St Martins Lane--have gotten an updated look, focusing on "comfort and simplicity." But don't worry, these stylish hotels still retain the minimalist look that made them "hotel famous."

Interior designer Tim Andreas of Banjo Ad Inc, who has worked on other Morgans Hotels, took charge of the renovations for both hotels. At the Sanderson, Andreas gave the 150 guest rooms new custom pieces like a cozy built-in banquette, a "Tchin Tchin" chair, custom rugs and hand-painted designs on the blackout shades. Here's a more official, and detailed, description:

The rooms will introduce a new sense of modern, paying tribute to the baroque era. Tim’s designs are inspired by decorative motifs from the 17th century including decorative, plaster trophy designs, elaborate wood oak carvings and hand-blocked scenic wallpaper to reflect the serenity and comfort of an English Manor House. With minor updates to the bathroom design, it remains encased in a glowing floor-to-ceiling glass box wrapped in golden layers of sheer curtains.

More importantly, these rooms got a tech upgrade, adding new flat-screen smart TVs, media hubs with USB charging, and additional charging stations near the bed.

At St Martins Lane, the 204 guest rooms now showcase an "experiential approach to minimalism" with the rooms designed to create the feeling that guests are floating over the city. Don't fret, the hotel's iconic mood lighting remains.

Linen drapery, polished aluminum, teardrop lighting fixtures and pale leopard print carpets soften the space, while the updated iconic interactive light feature allows guests to elevate their mood selecting from a spectrum of colors with a custom-designed dial. The newly-painted room will enhance this lighting effect, which will also reflect off of the newly dichroic laminated glass desk as well as the illuminated surface that holds the new flat-screen smart TV.

The rooms also feature new mini-bars which have mirrors that give off a see-through effect. (That sounds intriguing but as long as you can't see us reaching for that chocolate bar, we're ok with it.)

And you'll be happy to know that St Martins Lane got the same tech upgrades as The Sanderson. USB ports for everyone!

Compared with photos of how the rooms used to look, the new styles are not that much of a departure but the little touches do make a difference.

Rates start at £239 a night plus VAT and that now includes complimentary WiFi for guests. Hallelujah!

Currently, the hotels are offering a Summer in the City package which gives up to 30 percent off the best rate, along with breakfast for two and a bottle of champanged in-room on arrival. Book by June 30th for stays from July 21st to September 7th.
