Hyatt Hotels and Resorts may be opening their luxury brand Grand Hyatt in this rather pronounced building in Barcelona, known as the Torre Agbar (Agbar Tower.) It’s not the tallest building in Barcelona (at 38 stories, it’s the third tallest) but it is certainly one of the most talked about.

Anyone who lives or visits this artsy city cannot avoid the presence of this glass-enclosed missile. The locals have their own name for it, which we hesitate to print. Let’s just say there is a similar shaped building that graces (or not) the London skyline, known affectionately as the “guerkin.” However, we and others may see this tower of power, Hyatt sees it as their Barcelona address for Grand Hyatt.

The Agbar Tower, named for its original tenant, was completed in 2005, designed by acclaimed French architect Jean Nouvel. Ateliers Jean Nouvel has several hotel credits including Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom and Renaissance Barcelona Fira. Nouvel refers to his Agbar building as “an emergence” rather than a skyscraper. That's some Architect chatter for ya.

The new hotel is slated to have 417 rooms, several restaurants, an auditorium, and other yet to be named features. The Tower is a tourist attraction and, similar to the Shard in London, will have a separate visitor entrance for access to an observation deck.

This project in the early stages of development and renovations may not start until next year. We don’t know of a targeted completion date, but as always we will keep you posted on the hotel’s progress. It will be interesting to see how the interior design takes form, given the shape of the building and its unusual façade. Perhaps Jean Nouvel will “emerge” as the selected designer.
