The New Hilton Schiphol Airport Is Surrounding Its Predecessor
Last year we looked at how the Hilton at Amsterdamís Schiphol Airport would be building itself a replacement hotel right next to the 1972 original, gold-reflective windows and all. Back then, there was just a bare plot of land, but a quick check just before a recent departure from Schiphol showed us that construction is moving along nicely.
If youíre wondering why the two are quite so close together, itís because the current hotelís days are numbered: once the new Hilton is complete in 2015, its elderly neighbor will be facing the wrecking ball. The above picture also shows a sliver of the multi-colored diamond-shaped exterior cladding that will cover the hotel Ė a rendering of what that will turn out to be you can see below.
The Hilton will have 433 rooms surrounding a central atrium, with rooms divided between those facing that atrium and those with a view of the surrounding area. Other facilities will include an Executive Lounge, meeting space, restaurant, bar, spa, and fitness center.
This aerial shot shows the hotelís proximity to the airportís single terminal sprawler, which youíll be able to access without going outside, through the office buildings and past nearest competitor Sheraton (the fifth, white building after the row of offices). Hopefully this time next year we can show you the end result.
