Welcome to Funky Friday, a new segment we’re trying out which features one photo that we think singularly expresses a hotel’s inner psyche. We look for, and often find, a lot of wacky, wild and wondrous designs that seem to have one thing in common: a Type A personality. So why not have a bit of fun as we all wrap up our week by taking a quick look at some hotels that quite frankly, want our attention.

For all the die-hard campers out there, there is finally a hotel designed just for you, only it's in uber-urban Berlin. As funky as this may sound, Hutten Palast is a different concept that's cleverly delivered, and it's a pretty good deal too at less than $100 per night. For these reasons and more, we think it's well earned a place in Funky Friday.

The picture above is one of several caravan accommodations that are dispersed within two large halls of a former factory. Not unlike a camp ground if you think about it. You are sharing a large space with other guests. A small hang out area adjoins each caravan, which serves as the bedroom (the hotel notes the caravans are not soundproof.) There are other styles available including cabins--both traditional and contemporary--and each hall has a common lounge. The bath and shower facilities are shared, but of course guys and gals are separated.

Sorry, there is no room service and no mini-bar. Coffee and croissants are offered in the mornings, and there is a café on site serving three meals a day. The café is open to both guests and visitors, and specializes in organic, locally sourced menus. Yes, of course there is German beer, identified on the web site as “Smudge” beer from Stuttgart. Free samples?

Should the caravan concept not be your thing, Hutten Palast offers “regular” hotel rooms with private bathrooms. These are located in the main building. Everyone gets free WiFi.

While this accommodation may not be for everyone, we like the creative spirit and originality that went into it. It’s a great fit for artistic Berlin, and imagine how much fun it could be to fully book one of the halls (or a six car lot) for a family re-union or best friend getaway.

Caravan room rates from €65, double; hotel room rates from €85, double
