NYC's Tommie Hotel is Slowly Moving Along, with New Renderings

It's been seven months since we noted that construction was slowly but surely happening on the Tommie Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Seems we should have emphasized the slowly over the surely as we peeked in the other day and found only the beginning of excavations. On the brighter side, though, we also found a rendering pasted up -- albeit alongside a somewhat disappointing Spring 2016 estimated completion.

A peek at architect Gwathmey Siegel Kaufman's website throws up some more renderings revealing an interesting grid-like feature on the rooftop and at the front entrance.

Curiously, the rendering shows the name "Jones" over the entrance and the owner is listed on signage as "Cusie 31 LLC". But, as we haven't heard any different -- and Tommie are displaying a very Midtown-looking photo at their website -- we are still marking this future 250-room hotel down as a Tommie.

SBD has recently recapitalized the project through a discounted purchase of the original debt, and a discounted buyout of AREA's equity stake. SBD brought in Geolo Capital (The investment arm of John Pritzker) and Thompson Hotels, and now owns the land for $180 per FAR square foot.

SBD recently purchased the land from Geolo Capital with the London-based private equity firm, Cube Capital. It is currently designing the hotel and plans to start construction in early 2013 with an opening in 2014. Thompson/JDV Hotels, now known as Commune, will be managing the 33-story, 260 room boutique hotel, which will have a 125-seat restaurant, lounge and rooftop bar with 360 degree views.
