Twice New In Holborn: citizenM and Hoxton Should Open This Year

Where: High Holborn / Holborn Viaduct, London, United Kingdom

Rosewood London may have dominated headlines for the past six months as the new kid on the block in Holborn (sorry Boris, we’re still not down with calling it ‘Midtown’), but this year should see two new hotels opening in the same area, albeit in a very different segment: citizenM and Hoxton, both representing the much appreciated wave of stylish but affordable options that most cities need more of.

It’s also seconds for both when it comes to the British capital: citizenM Bankside is a twenty-minute walk across the river, and Hoxton Shoreditch has been doing its things just east of the Old Street roundabout for eight years. We walked past both hotels to check out what the buildings are like and how construction is coming along.

citizenM Holborn will be located on Holborn Viaduct in a former office block. As dreary as it looked, we can totally picture this being a citizenM hotel; the symmetrically-laid out windows would lend themselves perfectly for the brand’s signature compact rooms. We’d hazard a guess that this will be citizenM’s largest hotel yet, if rooms will span the full T-shaped building.

While the group’s website still talks about 2014, we’re slightly concerned by the fact that the building seemed pretty dormant. Granted, we walked by on a weekend, but aside from a few demolition signs and a whole lotta mess visible inside, it didn’t feel like a hotel on its way to opening. It has a lot of promise though, including a cute triangular garden at the pointy end of the plot that would make a perfect terrace to accompany the hotel’s public areas inside.

Further west, the Hoxton Holborn will combine two architecturally-divergent buildings into a 174 room hotel. Room categories will total three: comfy, cosy, and tiny [UPDATE: we heard from the Hoxton that room categories will not be these three in the end, with final details still to be confirmed. The majority of the hotel faces High Holborn, with a wing of the rather brutalist-concrete half extending into a small side street. In terms of timing, we’ve heard summer is when doors open.

Hoxton has said rooms will start from £69 ($110) a night, and we hope that citizenM will not be far off that number either. We’ll keep you posted as they both get closer to opening, as well as any news on citizenM’s third location at Tower Hill, also due this year.
