W Beijing and W Shanghai Get Hit With Major Delays

There is no stopping W Hotels: Amsterdam, Milan, even Reykjavik may get a W outpost in the next few years, and then there is the branching out into ski resorts too.

Way back in 2012, we snapped a few pictures of another newcomer: the W Beijing Chang’An, hoping it would be ready for what then seemed an eternity away – the first day of 2014. That, unfortunately, did not quite work out as planned, with the hotel now pushed back until late June. New Year’s day of 2014 was going to be a double party, with the joint opening of sister property W Shanghai – The Bund, but there we’re looking at June next year before we get to go inside. At least we have some glimpse of what the hotels look like for you now.

W Beijing Chang’An will have 340 rooms on Jian Guo Mennan Avenue, across the street from the behemoth Marriott City Wall, from where we first spotted the construction site, and in an area full of hotels. Nothing is quite “steps away” like the website proclaims the Forbidden City to be, as Beijing can be, let’s say, a challenge to navigate, but the hotel’s location is pretty convenient.

There will be three restaurants, including a Chinese option, the usual Living Room social scene and spa.

W Shanghai on The Bund will have 600 rooms in the two futuristic towers below. Way (way) back when we first talked about a W in Shanghai, the hotel was planned within the IFC towers in the Pudong business district. That in the end became the Ritz-Carlton, and W took a river boat and set up shop across the water.

Based on the orientation of the rendering versus the Pudong skyscrapers and the killer view we enjoyed from the Park Hyatt Shanghai you can see in the distance, we place the W north of the Wusong River, taking up one end of a long stretch of Huangpu riverside hotels that reaches all the way to the Indigo. Given the scale of the hotel, we expect the W amenities to be pretty impressive, which will include a WET pool complex. We’ll keep you posted as more details come out.
