Wilson and his wife, Laura Lee Brown, bought the 15-story First National Building on West Main Street to house the 80-room hotel, which would be 21c's fourth location. But, according to company president, Craig Greenberg, renovation has met with some challenges, and construction won't get going for another four months.
From the Lexington Herald-Leader:
"Urban development and historic redevelopment projects often take longer than expected, and we don't want to compromise on the quality of the 21c experience here in Lexington," Greenberg said. "But there have been some surprises."
Chiefly, "water intrusion in the basement that we didn't know about," Greenberg said.
The building also will need "a significant amount of environmental remediation," he said of substances including asbestos. Also, the multiple buildings of the site have floors at different levels, complicating how to merge them into one cohesive space.
In the meantime, construction has already begun on the slated-to-be-fifth (maybe now fourth) property in Durham, NC; but Wilson teased a few more locations.
"Someday there will be six hotels, then 10 hotels," Wilson said. "I'd love to do one in Havana." Whoa, pipe dreams! Let's just focus on getting #4 and #5 up first.
