Pony Up: Here's How Hotels Are Celebrating Polo Season

Polo season is in full gear in the UK and will be starting soon enough in the rest of the world. Whether it’s polo-inspired cocktail menus, training with the polo pros or exclusive access to top matches, these hotels want you to experience polo paradise.

Three of the world’s top polo matches take place in Argentina, so it’s a pretty big deal there. The new bar at Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires pays homage to the sport and to the revered Argentinean polo team, La Dolfina. However, the Pony Line Bar and Lounge may be clad in brown leather and have a riding motif throughout, but it ain’t a sports bar as you know it to be.

It’s more for the urban sophisticate who wants to try the housemade chorizo and oxtail empanadas to go along with his or her artisanal locally-produced Stallion beer than the Bud Light and wings crowd. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that—we like a good stack of salt-and-pepper wings as much as the next guy or gal. We’re just sayin’.)

If you want to get an even bigger taste of the game, as a hotel guest you can visit La Dolfina Polo Ranch to learn more about the sport and why Argentina is reputed to be so good at it. Rates start at $595 in October.

Coworth Park, a luxe Dorchester Collection country house hotel in Ascot, already offers guests and locals the full glam equestrian lifestyle with its riding menu and polo facilities, but now the hotel also offers the Guards Polo Academy, giving you the chance to learn the sport with expert Andrew Hine, former captain of the England Polo Team. If you book A Royal Life at Coworth Park package you’ll get to live like a Royal (polo being the sport of kings, after all). The package includes a riding or polo lesson; accommodations in two rooms for two nights; a customized tour of Windsor with carriage rides and a picnic lunch; afternoon tea for a family of four and other treats fit for a king. The package starts at £3,090 ($4,817).

If you’re more content to think about polo than play it, then try one of the hotel’s new polo-themed cocktails which includes the Modern Julab, inspired by the founders of the game in ancient Persia, and Under the Neck, named after the most difficult shot in the game.

The Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach has partnered up with the International Polo Club Palm Beach, the nation’s most prestigious polo club, to offer three exclusive polo excursions. Named the Polo in Paradise Package, you can choose one of these excursions for every three-day stay, so stay for nine nights and you can have it all.

The first excursion is A Perfect Polo Picnic where a delightful picnic with gourmet fare and bubbly champagne is yours to enjoy whilst watching a riveting polo match at the International Polo Club. Before you’re taken back to the hotel, smile at the camera while you meet the players and congratulate them on a game well-played.

Next is the Ultra-VIP Sunday Brunch & Polo excursion and, we must say, this is our favorite. After your VIP Sunday Brunch at the Polo Club, you can enjoy your preferred veranda seating for the match. Once the players have played, join them on the field for the post-game ceremonies and get into party mode because you’re going to the official after-party at the club’s exclusive poolside Mallet Grille.

The final excursion is Stay & Play with the Best, where you get a personalized polo lesson with some top talent. Even if you don’t manage to hit that tiny ball with your tiny bat while on that moving beast of an animal, you can still celebrate not falling off the horse with the champagne they give you before heading back to the hotel.
