Plaza Athénée Paris may have celebrated its 100th anniversary earlier this year (April 20, to be exact), but specialty cocktails, a 10-metre anniversary cake, and 100 trees at Versailles aren’t going to be the only things marking the hotel’s centennial. On October 1, the hotel will close its doors for a partial renovation, which will expand its footprint into three surrounding buildings, adding six new guest rooms, eight suites, a ballroom, and two event spaces.

While the expansion happens, the Alain Ducasse restaurant, Le Bar (where we had that Baccarat cocktail), the courtyard garden, and a number of other spaces will be redesigned as well. May 2014 should see a refreshed Plaza Athénée start welcoming guests again, but if you can’t bear to be without it for so long, you also have a chance to take a piece of the hotel home. An auction of some of the hotel’s furniture and art (including the spoon and fork sculpture at the entrance of the Ducasse restaurant) will take place on October 8 by Artcurial, with available pieces exhibited between October 4 and 6.

Alternatively, staying the last weekend of September is possible in a Superior Guestroom starting from a not insubstantial €1,153 ($1,500) a night.
