At Long Last, 1 Hotels Will Open Their 1st Hotel--in South Beach
It's officially off-season in Miami and that means the Miami Hotel Mambo is heating up. In this week's number, Miami man Gregg Rory Holland told us that The Perry South Beach which once upon a time not too long ago used to be known as The Gansevoort has closed down for a $100 million renovation.
That's big news in itself. But what's even bigger about it is that the hotel will reopen as a 1 Hotels and Residences from Barry Sternlicht. This will be the first 1 Hotel to open and it will have 417 hotel rooms and 163 residential units.
For the hotel noobz out there, Sternlicht introduced his luxury 1 Hotels concept back in 2006. But the brand was whacked down by the economic fallout of 2008. It took a while but there have been encouraging signs of life again, with 1 Hotels and its sister luxury brand, Baccarat Hotels, planning to open five new hotels by 2015--two of which will be in NYC.
And now the 1 Hotel South Beach is poised to open in 2014.
The hotel does have a website but there's not much action on it. However, as Curbed Miami reported a few months ago, the 1 Hotel will keep its sustainable vibe (which was something they boasted about back in 2006), although to our eyes, the renderings don't look that impressive.
And we kinda can't believe 1 Hotels would pick up a cursed location like the Perry/Gansevoort/Roney Palace. Then again, $100 million is a lot of money. Hopefully, that will do the trick.
