Amenities We Wish Every Hotel Stocked (for Free!)

We recently stayed at a large chain hotel (erm, kinda rhymes with chariot) and everything was fine until we went into the bathroom and took a shower. Not only was there no shower gel, but there wasn't any lotion! Only shampoo and conditioner and two skimpy bars of soap.

Now, we weren't that upset about the lack of shower gel, we get some hotels don't use it. But lotion? C'mon. When we went to the front desk the next day we were told that you just have to simply ask someone at reception for lotion. Um...what fresh hell is that?

Flash forward to an unpleasant TSA experience where they wanted us to show them our quart-size baggie full of our liquids. We haven't done that in ages. We've just simply put the appropriate size products in our Dopp kit and sailed through the scanner. After all, if it's over 3.4 oz they'll nab you anyway, right?

So, after our fit returning home, we wondered how could we ensure we'd never be caught in a hotel without essentials, but also bring with us amenities we wish hotels had so we could cut down our liquid lugging.

Luckily, we found some solutions!

As you can see from the image above, there are some great travel-friendly products. We've stashed them in our Dopp kit and they've made our lives so much easier and lighter.

Our favorites:
La Fresh's Travel Lite packets are a godsend. They have everything you need while on the road. The list is long---Hydrating Lotion travel wipes, works-all-day antiperspirant wipes (for men and women), as well as insect repellent, antibacterial and personal care wipes. So, you'll always be prepared whether you're in a desert hut, an eco-style cabana with an outhouse , woodsy campsite or hot Caribbean resort. And the great thing is, most are made with natural and moisturizing ingredients.

Blowfish for Hangovers is what you want in a hotel minibar (worth paying for!) so you don't have to run down to the lobby kiosk and beg for an aspirin to counteract all those beverages you consumed the night before. This stuff is better than any remedy we've ever tried, and its compact envelope barely takes up any room. Get it at 3floz.com.

The Laundress' Crease Release is in a more sleek bottle than the travel-size Downy Wrinkle Releaser, and works even better with less to tote around (2oz). It's non-toxic and allergen free, a boon for those who need clean-and-clear products. Plus, it's great when you're on a cruise ship where irons aren't allowed! Get it at 3floz.com.

Admit it, sometimes you don't have time to wash your hair properly. That's why the Blow Pro's Faux Dry Shampoo is freakin' genius. It's not even a liquid, so the TSA can't bother you. The method is a modern take on an old remedy to get hair glossy quickly--by applying a scented talcum-like powder. And at 1.7 oz, you're golden for space. Get it at 3floz.com.

Now of course, the likelihood that any of these will be free in hotel rooms (though we've seen makeup remover pads), but if they were in your minibar you'd probably use 'em. But better still, buy them yourself and watch your carry-on load and hotel-amenity anxiety lighten.

Dry shampoo

I can't live without that! I would probably book a hotel room just for that alone. Instead I keep a travel size bottle of Pssssst! in my suitcase.

While most chain hotels won't be stocking items like this (boutique hotels are better about it) I did see an extra amenity stash in the suite rooms at the W Scottsdale that included a manicure touch-up kit, toothbrush/toothpaste, a razor kit, a sewing kit (remember when that used to be a standard amenity too), a shoe sponge and a couple of other little things. Would be nice if all the rooms had that tho!

Wishful thinking..

Most of these items are dream amenities, but if a hotel isn't offering lotion, that's when I start to worry!
And I love hotels with the toothbrush/razors. Never seen a manicure touch up kit--fancy!!
