New York Edition Is Well On Its Way To Becoming the Real Deal
It's been a minute since we last checked in on Ian Schrager's upcoming New York Edition, which was originally slated for a 2015 opening. Our friends at Curbed turned their attention to the hotel last week, after one reader complained that the iconic building's lights had ben permanently turned off.
Curbed posted a response from Marriott, in which we learned two things: first, the lights are only off temporarily while work is being undertaken to restore the building's exterior, and get that clock tower (above) in tip top shape. And second, the hotel is now scheduled to open in 2014, one year ahead of schedule.
Could it be? It certainly could. The Marriott rep explained that while "there is no set time table for the completion [of the restoration], it will likely be around the opening of the hotel, in 2014." Yippee!
The iconic building facing Madison Square Park first opened in 1909, so understandably there's a lot of work to be done, but we can't wait to see what the inside of this hotel looks like once completed. Schrager has been hard at work on this brand for years, and New York will be one of the first major metropolises in which the brand has debuted (Istanbul already opened last year, and London and Miami are on the way).
We'll certainly keep both eyes on the clock (heh), but in the meantime, check out our list of the top 5 Manhattan hotel openings for this year. There ought to be pleeenty to keep us distracted until 2014.
