A good sign when we showed up? The restaurant was packed even though it's not a very big space to begin with. We arrived at 8:30pm, sans reservations and were told it would be a 40-minute wait, even for bar seating. Apparently, a large party had booked out most of the outdoor patio. This wasn't a big deal to us as we weren't starving and we knew we could grab a drink around the corner at the just-opened Seasons52 rest. We finally returned to BPT about an hour later and we were seated within minutes with a super friendly server immediately taking our drink order.
Sadly, aside from the service, the rest of the meal at Blue Plate Taco left us a little blue. The drinks were not very well mixed as we had to stir our classic marg ($11) around a few times to let the tequila work its way up from the bottom of the glass. The chicken tacos we ordered ($12) were good but not a particular standout. The guac ($9) was also a little lacking in a flavor. The grilled corn ($6) was tasty but some parts were a little too burnt. Thank god for the churros ($8) at the end of the meal which perked us back up.
It may have been just an off night for the restaurant, maybe because of the big party on the patio but we didn't think it lived up to the hype--which was probably our own doing. That said, you can't beat the location overlooking the Pacific Ocean, especially on a gorgeous sunny day. And if you're a hotel guest, you can just take your tequila buzz right up to your room and sleep it off, no cabs needed!
Blue Plate Taco is open Sunday to Thursday from 11:30 am to 10 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. - 11 p.m. They aren't listed on OpenTable so be sure to call 310-458-2985 to make your rezzies.
Stay tuned later this week for our colleague's report from inside The Shore Hotel which was very blue, in a good way!
