Before Shanghai Comes Guangzhou: Another Mandarin Oriental Opening

Luxury hotels are opening left, right, and center in China; our recent archives are full of them. So humor us for a second, imagine we’d ask you to close your eyes and describe a new luxury hotel opening in a major Chinese city. How would you do it?

If you’re like us, it would go something like this: glassy high-rise, say, attached to a high-end mall? Check. Interiors done up in a mix of whites, greys, and woods, with a dash of contemporary Asian? Check, check. Large rooms, a Club floor, a mix of restaurants (both Chinese and Western, ideally some fusion in there) with a hip bar? Triple check.

Maybe some business and conference facilities, with the latest technology, as well as a swanky spa? Check, check, CHECK – and...welcome to the new Mandarin Oriental Guangzhou.

The latest opening by Mandarin Oriental, the hotel is in the third largest city in China, about 100 miles northwest of Hong Kong, where the original MO is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. It will also have to tie us over until the Mandarin Oriental Shanghai becomes reality, which – in the world of ubiquitous hotel delays – has gone from an anticipated March arrival to a now more likely July.

The glassy high-rise containing the hotel is attached to the vast TaiKoo Hui mall. Designer Tony Chi worked his magic on the 233 rooms and suites, which have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. They start at a roomy 645 square foot, and a Club floor option is available. Jiang is the Cantonese eatery, Ebony the classic grill restaurant, and The Loft is the cocktail bar. There’s function space, including a ballroom, and a spa with outdoor pool.

Until mid-April, there are two opening offers, starting from $340, plus 15% service charge. You can choose between a complimentary second night or a $150 spa or restaurant credit ($300 for suites), but the credit option does require you to book two nights. Both include complimentary internet and a one-way transfer from the airport or train station, with suite guests receiving a two-hour shopping concierge service in the TaiKoo Hui mall as well.
