Southcentral:
Kenai Fjords Lodge, located on Fox Island, is in the midst of constructing a brand new 3,000 sq-ft main Wilderness Lodge exclusively for overnight guests only (sorry, no day trippers allowed!). Set for a grand opening of May 31st, the new main lodge is poised on the edge of the beach and will feature a lounge with large two-story picture windows gazing out across Halibut Cove (pictured), in addition to an expanded kitchen designed to support an intimate new chef-directed culinary program and full bar. Each of the eight waterfront cabins were completely redone last year with custom fixtures and furnishings. Overnight rates go from $489 (double occ.) and include lodging, meals, transportation to the island from Seward and sightseeing cruise tour on day of departure.
AK's slickest new big mountain heli-ski base, Tsaina Lodge in Valdez, debuted one heckuva reno job to kick off last year's 2012 ski season. Now, the 16 room boutique is offering summer packages including accommodation and access to adventurous outdoor activities (hiking, climbing, biking, rafting…you name it) in nearby Thompson Pass. Summer rates from $350 per night.
Far North:
The Akau Alaska Gold and Resort, L.L.C., situated in the tundra close to Nome, is putting the finishing touches on two new 16x16 foot cabins where folks can kick back after gold sluicing, wildlife spotting, ATV-ing or fishing. Summer rates from $130 per night and include two hearty, home-cooked meals.
