We're Feeling A Bit Catty About Red Lion Hotels' New Leo Collection

When was the last time you stayed at a Red Lion Hotel? It seems the hotel gets a bad rap of the Super 8 and Motel 6 variety, though we seem to see plenty of good reviews overall. A Hilton it's not, but it'll do in a pinch. Well, it looks like the company wants to up its game and add a third brand of hotels to their corporation called the Leo Hotel Collection. The second sister is Red Lion Inn & Suites.

Each Leo hotel will be an independently owned franchise property that is “unique, boutique and/or historic,” according to Red Lion HQ. At first we thought this meant they were going to roll out a bunch of funky new properties, all with a different look a la Pasadena Quality Inn—but that doesn’t seem to be the case. It appears more like an opportunity for already established hotels to join up with the brand, and slap the Leo name on their doors.

We worry.

Hopefully there will be some good quality control and perhaps some surprisingly fantastic properties to add to the Red Lion dosier out there, otherwise, what’s to stop an on-its-last-legs “historical” B&B from becoming a Leo Hotel?

According to Harry Sladich, Red Lion’s executive vice president of sales, marketing and distribution, the goal for Leo Collection is to “attract new guests and to provide our current guests with fantastic new locations.” He also said the new Leo Hotel Collection will offer unique, "one-off" experiences and lodging that is truly genuine to the destination. There’s also a plan to rebrand Red Lion Hotels with restaurants and banquet meeting spaces.

We’ll be following up to find out what “new guests” the Leo brand will court.

There are currently 48 Red Lion hotels in nine states and British Columbia.

They've partnered up with LVH in Las Vegas. An off Strip hotel so run down that Hilton took it's name back from it. (It used to be the Las Vegas Hilton. See what they did there?)

A Letter from Red Lion

..was received and they mentioned the LVH joining the LEO Collection as if this was a boon for the brand. I welcome the Director of Corporate Communications to explain to HC readers what quality measures Red Lion will be using for the "new" Leo Hotels.
