What Is This at The Marco Island Marriott?

It took us a few minutes to realize this gorgeous creature at the Marco Island Marriott wasn't made of stone or plaster, but rather, plain sand.
Her name is Margo and she was created by Dale Messick, best known as the cartoonist behind the Brenda Starr comic strip. This sand version was created by artist John Gowdy and sits in the hotel's stairwell, and is a sight to be hold, especially lit up at night. This is an actual replica of the bronze-statue of the Margo character made in 1966 by sculptor Tony Lopez.
You can see her in all her glory after the jump.
The bronze statue above sits permanently right across from the hotel's Quinn's on the Beach restaurant after being moved several times over many decades. So, now you can gaze upon her while dining on stone crab, gazpacho, or a slice of key-lime pie (it almost matches her coloring).
Unfortunately, the sand-sculpture-on-steroids will soon be thing of the past, as the hotel decides what they'd next like to highlight, but rest assured, another work of art will soon take this coveted spot.
