Built way, way up at the top of Poriya Mountain (you need a car to get here) on the western side of the lake, Poriya Guest House is an unpretentious 18-room hotel with basic amenities like WiFi, HD TVs, tiled bathrooms, a spacious lobby, and a dining room serving kosher meals. Nothing too special about the design or the service (extra beds fold out of the walls, making the place attractive to groups of backpackers), but what is special about this place are the incredible views of Tiberias, the Sea of Galilee, and nearby Switzerland Forest.
Almost all rooms offer balconies that face the water, and when we woke up in the morning with the sun reflecting off the same surface that Jesus supposedly walked on, it was definitely one of those 'Aha' travel moments.
Due to the incredibly steep landscape of the surrounding area, and the hotel's location at the top of the mountain, Poriya Guest House is the perfect way to experience some of northern Israel's natural beauty, outside of the craziness of Tel Aviv, and for way less money.
Rooms start at around $98 USD, with the option of staying in one of the central building guest rooms, or a private wooden cabin. Breakfast and WiFi are included.
