With Lehman Brothers backing the project, the hotel has sat silently on its ridge overlooking Palm Springs since the financier’s collapse in mid-September 2008, about three-quarters of the way to completion. Years ago, we once wandered around the empty rooms and hallways of New York’s The Plaza when it was in the middle of the sale of all its contents prior to its controversial renovation. It was a fascinating, but eerie, experience, and we imagine being inside the Ritz-Carlton now - frozen in time, untouched - must be similar.

And while the hotel is still listed as a future opening, there is no date, or year for that matter, set for when that will happen. When the day comes, there will be 260 rooms and 30 suites, with a Ritz-Carlton Club level, several restaurants, and an extensive La Prairie spa. It might just be the winner of longest hotel delay of all time when it does.
