Development news from 3201 Collins Avenue, Miami keeps catching us off-guard. Back in January 2012, there was this bait and switch where the development sneakily went from Cipriani Miami to a new Faena project. Now we hear that they've been keeping a star design duo under their belts: Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin.

The husband-and-wife movie director and costume/set designer duo will be collaborating on the design for the 168-suite hotel; handling the interiors, uniforms, and 'cultural programming' for the what was originally called the Saxony Hotel, which is just one part of Faena's huge Miami development project.

According to Vanity Fair, the two have fully immersed themselves in the project, "just like we would deal with a film"; going so far as to interview the sons of the hotel's founder, George Sax.

The hotel will feature multiple restaurants, a 16,000-square-foot spa, a cabaret, and a cinema. We can't wait to see if some of Luhrmann's films influence the design: the seductive reds of Moulin Rouge, perhaps, or the gaudiness of Strictly Ballroom (though we're feeling a little burned out on the Gatsby-esque art deco this year).

If you have a spare three minutes, you really must watch the overly dramatic promo video at Faena's website, in which Luhrmann and Faena congratulate each other on their good work and get giddy with excitment. The hotel is "like a movie but it's real". Says Baz. "Yes!" Says Alan: "a movie that will live forever!"
