Just as the Great House on Necker Island is open again for business, is Richard Branson expanding his exclusive Virgin Limited Edition collection of billionaire-worthy escapes and toys (Necker Nymph anyone?). The place is called Mahala Mzuri, in the Maasai Mara region of southern Kenya, a name that means ‘beautiful place’ in Swahili.

The traditional Maasai ceremony to celebrate the opening took place at the end of last month, and Branson participated as recognised Maasai Elder, which he became six years ago. Who knew?

This being a Limited Edition property, there are only 12 individual accommodations that stretch the meaning of the word “tent” to the limit. They are rather futuristic-looking, each on a raised platform with terrace to take advantage of the views, and private en-suite bathrooms. There is of course a main tent with living and dining area and pool.

Why here? The natural beauty of eastern Africa is truly astounding, with a vastness of landscape and sky that us city dwellers do not come across very often, and the Great Migration is one of those bucket list items many want to see for themselves. If experiencing that while in the lap of luxury sounds like your thing, then Mahala Mzuri might be for you.

Rates start at $580 per person per night, including all meals, drinks and daily game drives. That is based on double occupancy, bringing you to $1180 for two. During high season, that goes up to $975 per person. Following your international flight into Nairobi, it is an hour’s flight from Wilson Domestic Airport to a local airstrip, after which it is an hour’s drive to Mahala Mzuri.
