The hotel in May

We don’t really mean that of course: who are we to suggest the Kaiser would ever be late? But we couldn’t resist the alliteration, and the delay is very real for Sofitel So Singapore, now not opening until March 2014.

When we had a proper look around in May, we tried to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt when it came to a planned November opening (given the breakneck speed of construction in Singapore). Unfortunately, our innate skepticism was justified; now we are looking at another five months before this emblem, by the hand of Lagerfeld, will greet guests upon arrival.

The hotel in November

One of our friends on the ground was kind enough to face the seasonal thunderstorms and snap an evening picture for us so we could see with our own eyes how the 1927 structure has been virtually taken over by the typical scaffolding.

Between the renovation of the classic building facing Robinson Road and the new extension round the back, there will be 118 rooms and 16 suites, all with free WiFi, complimentary minibar and lots of technology touches that extend to iPad minis. Facilities will include a rather glamorous looking rooftop pool and bar and downstairs restaurant.

We’ll keep you posted as So Singapore gets closer to opening and more details on Lagerfeld’s work are available.
