We've been hearing rumblings about the long-anticipated Knickerbocker Hotel for years now, so it comes as quite a relief to get some solid news about the project -- and even a website .

The all-new Knickerbocker is slated to now open in mid-2014, and it has just been accepted into The Leading Hotels of the World fold. The hotel will have 330 guestrooms, a food and beverage collaboration "with one of the most recognized master chefs in New York" including a signature restaurant and bar on the fourth-floor; a ground-level boulangerie, and an 7,500-square-foot rooftop bar and terrace offering panorama of the city's skyline.

The hotel is waiting to announce its partnership with an "internationally acclaimed architecture and interior design firm" with a "renowned luxe aesthetic," but a look at the project page at the New York City Investment Fund says that the architects and designers will be the ubiquitous Peter Poon Architects and Gabellini Sheppard, who designed the Edition Istanbul and Public Chicago.

The original Knickerbocker Hotel was opened by John Jacob Astor IV in 1906. It hosted such guests as John D. Rockefeller and the world-famous tenor Enrico Caruso (who ate every meal in his room, with the same cutlery); had its own subway entrance, and is thought to have been the birthplace of the original martini. The hotel closed in 1921 and during recent work, according to this report at Curbed, the "interior was taken down to the floor plates, so it will essentially be a brand new hotel", except for its original Beaux-Arts façade.
