Residence Inn By Marriott Coming to the Bronx
With so much news about Manhattan and Brooklyn hotel openings all the time, it's easy to forget the city of New York actually has five boroughs, not just two. And while the city's northernmost borough, the Bronx, wouldn't (and couldn't) ever try to compete with the others in terms of hotel rooms, we're glad to see Residence Inn By Marriott is showing the area a little love.
Crain's reported yesterday that a new Residence Inn will open in 2014, housed inside a 370,00 sq ft mixed-use building known as Metro Center Atrium, which will contain offices, medical spaces, retail outlets and restaurants.
Misleadingly, Crain's reports that it will be a "luxury" hotel checking into the borough, which, as most of us know, is a bit of an exaggeration. Residence Inn is about as close to luxury as a yellow taxi is to a stretch limo—but it'll get the job done.
The Metro Center Atrium will in fact be part of a 42-acre Hutchinson Metro Center commercial campus. And attached to the hotel will be a 43,000 sq ft L.A. Fitness center. Understandably, the Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr., is pretty excited:
"My office is thrilled that the Bronx will see the development of a high-level hotel in the east Bronx. This hotel will help drive business to our borough, offer tourists a chance to spend more than one day in the Bronx and shows us that the business community has a positive feeling about the future of the Bronx."
You hear that? The Bronx: good for more than just Yankee games and cannoli on Arthur Ave.
