Who needs the bar when you've got a Martini Man at Four Seasons Chicago?

Where many hotels are trending toward minimalist room service, there are others that may forever remain true to room service indulgence. It’s not to say that one is better than the other since we definitely like having options and alternative methods of room service rescue.

For example, here in Chicago and on the minimalist side of room service, we love Acme Hotel Company’s morning thermos of hot coffee and PUBLIC Chicago’s inexpensive but gourmet meals delivered in a brown bag. Both are left outside your door at the time you specify with a quick rap on the door, successfully leaving you be first thing in the morning.

But there are times when you want to be tended to and treated like royalty, times when you just can’t get enough of over-the-top room service. We’ve seen the gamut and thought we’d seen it all, but Four Seasons Chicago and Ritz-Carlton Chicago recently caught our eye with throwbacks to old-school cool room service.

Forget about a martini, you need ice cream with all the fixins and she's the woman to get it done

Feeling too sloth-like to make your way to the lobby bar or rooftop lounge? Call on the Four Seasons’ Martini Man and his traveling martini cart, and for just $20 a pop, he’ll shake and serve a chilled martini of your choice (apple, cosmo, chocolate or old-school dirty). When winter sets in, opt instead for the Hot Chocolate Doc, who can infuse warm spirits into the steamy beverage ($20).

If cocktailing is easily trumped by sweets, ring instead for the Ice Cream Woman, also at the Four Seasons. She’ll show up at your room with her old-fashioned soda fountain cart, ready to serve you ice cream and toppings like gummy bears, chocolate chips, sprinkles, cherries and whipped cream ($12).

Who can make the sunrise, sprinkle it with dew, then show up at you door at the Ritz-Carlton, too?

At the Ritz-Carlton, Chicago, kids won’t believe their eyes when the Candy Man shows up at their hotel room door. They’ll get to fill a bag with lollipops, candy buttons, jawbreakers, chocolates and more. The best part? It’s a complimentary service offered to parents at check in.

Both hotels were fairly booked up through the end of September, but we did find rates from $469 at The Four Seasons Chicago and from $479 at the Ritz-Carlton,Chicago.
