Here We Go Again: Already Folks are Talking About Hotel Availability in Rio

August 23, 2012 at 4:38 PM | by | Comments (0)

The 2012 Summer Olympics in London just finished two weeks ago and already the focus has shifted to the hotel scene in Rio de Janeiro for both the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Fortunately, there's some good news. And yes, it will involve an explosion of hotel openings like we saw with London.

The Brazilian sports minister recently assured the sporting world at large that Rio would have enough hotel rooms to accommodate all the visitors who come into town for the World Cup and later, the Olympics. It appears a recent UN Summit back in May in Rio left folks very concerned as there were only 33,000 hotel beds in town to service over 50,000 attendees. Airbnb.com, anyone?

In total, Rio is hoping to add about 17,000 more hotel rooms by 2016. And interestingly, Accor Hotels which counts Sofitel, Ibis and Novotel amongst their hotel brands, is leading the way by investing $2.5 billion in new hotels through 2015. But we can't help but wonder what other brands are coming to the city?

Right now, we see there's a Grand Hyatt in the works but nothing is showing up on W Hotels for Rio. A JW Marriott recently opened there and we bet they will have some more opening as the events draw closer. Not sure what Hilton, who has no hotels in Rio, is doing. Ditto for InterContinental Hotels.

And what about the boutique boys? Could Thompson Rio be coming soon? What about Andaz, Virgin, Delano or Bulgari? We guess we'll just have to wait and stalk people for more information see.
